The PGA Tour saw players start to golf at higher levels than the world had ever seen in 1965 and things just kept getting better in 1966. Jack Nicklaus had set records with his performance in the Masters the previous year and many people were wondering if he could possibly come through and take the tournament again. Other players such as Gary Player, Dave Marr and Peter Thomson managed to make some noise in the Major tournaments that year. Each of those players was hoping that in 1966 they would be able to defend their title.

Unfortunately for Player, Marr and Thomson, 1966 would not be their year. While they each had some highs and lows, they were not able to pull out victories in the Major Tournaments like they were the year before. However, Jack Nicklaus would not be stopped in his pursuit towards becoming one of the greatest golfers of all team. Nicklaus had already won 4 majors in his career, but he hoped to take on a few more Majors in 1966 in order to level himself with the likes of golf greats such as Arnold Palmer.

Nicklaus came through in the Masters once again in 1966, winning the tournament for the ...
... 2nd time in a row and the 3rd time in 4 years. While the previous year Nicklaus ran away with the show, this year he would have to really fight for the chance to take home the victory.

After day one it looked like Nicklaus would put on another show that could not be equaled. He shot 4 under par in a field that featured very few players that were even able to break par in any of the rounds. However, day 2 was a different story for Nicklaus. He shot a 76, falling back to par. The next two days Nicklaus was only able to take home par scores. This would leave him at par for the tournament in a deadlock with Tommy Jacobs and Gay Brewer for the lowest score in the tournament. Ultimately these players would have to decide the champion by way of a playoff. Nicklaus beat his opponents by 2 and 8 strokes respectively in order to win another Master's jacket.

The other Major tournament for Nicklaus that year was the Open Championship. This would be another tight field with scores that were not extremely low. Only 3 players in the field managed to break par for the tournament. After those three players the next best scores started at 2 over par. Jack Nicklaus, Doug Sanders and Dave Thomas were the three players that stood out in this tournament. Nicklaus was carried by a 67 in the second round, giving him an advantage over his competition. In the end Nicklaus went on to win with a 2 under par score. Thomas a Sanders would tie for 2nd place at 1 under par.

The U.S. Open and the PGA Championship were won by Billy Casper and Al Geiberger in 1966. 1966 was a fine year for golf, and it was a classic year for Jack Nicklaus.
