The year 1966 was significant for women's tennis in many ways. While the previous season was dominated by Margaret Court, 1966 would bring more parity to Women's Tennis. 1965 featured Margaret Court winning three Grand Slams. She would continue to have success in the 1966 season, but she would not dominate all of women's tennis like she did in 1965.

Another exciting thing about 1966 was the emergence of Billie Jean King. We know Billie Jean King to be a famous player that would go on to be one of the best players of all time in women's tennis. However, she had never won a Grand Slam before that season. In fact, Billie Jean King did not even officially turn pro until that time. However, this would be the year that she would make the jump and take her first Grand Slam. She would also shoot through the rankings during the year to reach a number one ranking.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the year would be the Australian Open. This tournament was absolutely dominated by Margaret Court coming into the 1966 season. Court had been historically dominant in this tournament, winning for 6 straight years going into ...
... the 1966 season. While Court was not as dominant in all of the tournaments for the year, there would be no stopping her in the Australian Open. Court would beat out all of the competition in order to take the Australian Open tournament for the 7th consecutive year. Her dominance in this tournament has not been matched by any other player.

The next Grand Slam tournament would be the French Open. The previous year this was the only tournament that Margaret Court was not able to win. The winner was Lesley Turner Bowrey. While she was the winner the previous year, she was not able to come through with another Grand Slam victory in 1966. This tournament would belong to Ann Haydon Jones. It had been many years, but Haydon Jones had won the tournament previously. Her first victory in the tournament came in 1961. This French Open victory would be significant for her career. It appeared that she was out of competition after not winning a Grand Slam for many years but she managed to get back on track again.

The third Grand Slam Tournament of the year would be Wimbledon. This tournament would be a favorite of Billie Jean King in years to come and it all started in 1966. She made her way through the competition and managed to take home her first Grand Slam that season. This Grand Slam would be the first of 12 total that she would win in her career. It would also be the first of 6 Wimbledon tournaments that she would win over the course of her career.

The final Grand Slam tournament of the year would be the US Open. This tournament would be won by Maria Bueno. Bueno had been a consistent contender for years, but the previous year she was beat out by Court repeatedly and was not able to take home a Grand Slam. This Grand Slam victory would be the 7th and final Grand Slam of her career.
