Uffizi Gallery – The House Of Renaissance Art

The first feeling to sweep across anyone visiting Florence is the feeling of traveling back in time to renaissance period, which is why the city is commonly referred to as ‘Renaissance City of Florence’. Naturally, like the rest of Italy, Florence too has its share in housing world renowned museums. Uffizi Gallery is one of the most important museums showcasing the most treasured art of the renaissance period.
The gallery was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560, for Cosimo I, of Medici Family. The Gallery was originally designed as the house of Offices for the Medici family. Originally, one room was dedicated by the Medici family to house the most priced art collection of the family. Now, the gallery houses the most important renaissance art works by some of the greatest artists of that time.
The Uffizi Gallery has 45 rooms in total, which contains art work from 13th century, all the way up to 18th century in chronological order. The art lovers get to travel through all the centuries era by era. Rooms 1 to 28 are dedicated to Florentine Renaissance art collection and room numbers ...
... 29-45 house the art work from high renaissance and Mannerism periods. Frescos of the 16th century sculptures can be found all along the corridors of the gallery itself.
Some of the greatest artists of renaissance period like Michelangelo, Bernini, Giotto, Caravaggio, Raphael and Medici can be found in the Uffizi Gallery. Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’ and ‘Birth of Venus’ and Michelangelo’s ‘Doni Tondo’ depicting the holy family can be found among the art collection at the museum. Other great works like Raphael’s self portrait, Bernini’s famous sculpture of ‘The Martyred St. Lawrence’ can also be seen in the Gallery.
The highlight of the Gallery is the ‘Tribuna Room’ which was the original room that had the art collection from the Medici family. The ‘Vasari Corridor’ which connects the gallery to Pitti Palace on the other side of the Arno river, is also world renowned. The 1 Kilometer long passage is decorated with breathtaking views of the city along with 17th and 18th century art work including self portraits of many great artists. But the admission to the corridor is restricted and is open to only privileged groups of tourists and special touring groups.
Uffizi Gallery is one of the busiest museums in Italy, so making prior reservations is mandatory, to avoid a minimum wait of 2 to 3 hours. Entrance is faster if a guided tour or a package museum tour in Florence is booked.
