Modern art is not the same as contemporary art. Modern art actually refers to art that was created between 1870 and 1970. Contemporary art refers to works created from 1970 to the present. One of the best things about contemporary art is that it doesn't have a rigid tradition or concepts. Modern art was quite different and there are a number of variances.
The traditional practices were left behind in favor of a more emotional canvas. The many different art movements during this time period included impressionism and cubism, constructivism, and futurism. Painters such as Van Gogh, Picasso, and Rouault were all famous for their modern works of art.
Original art from this time period can be hard to locate, as many are already in public and private collections. Unless you can afford to bid on the major works in an auction house such as Sotheby's, you may want to look for an additional avenue to find what you are looking for.
The internet has opened up a whole new era for buying original art. No longer do you need to walk through galleries around the world hoping to find the one piece you need to compliment your ...
... collection. Now you can simply go online and see pieces for sale all over the world. Some of today's pieces are very affordable, especially when sold by the owner and not by a broker.
Another plus is that you can find modern art, contemporary art, pop art, and more all categorized for easy viewing. Perhaps you're looking for a piece from a less known artist. Instead of sitting watching an auction on Ebay, you can find a website that offers the pieces for a set rate. Of course, you'll want a certificate of authenticity whenever possible, to protect your investment.
Original art is highly desired, especially in this age of prints and reprints. It seems as though all of the masters have had their works done time and time again, some to the point of it being hard to distinguish between an original and a reproduction. Unless you're an expert in art, it can be difficult to ensure you're getting a piece of original art. Today's artists, though, can give you a less expensive alternative to the million dollar pieces in a museum. You can appreciate pieces in your own modern art collection without mortgaging your house to do so!
In closing, if you want to buy art, especially original art, then it's time to look online. Forgo the expensive brokers, galleries, and art shows. Find what you're looking for in one place or sell the pieces that you no need for your collection. Look for a site that is reputable and offers pieces from every art movement. This will save you time in the long run. You should get a certificate of authenticity, even for pieces from the lesser known artists. This will help protect your investment. Many artists do not see their work become popular. It's only after their death that their talent is appreciated.
