Get A New Efficient Boiler And Save On Heating Bills This Winter

Winter is on the way and before the first blizzard hits might be a good time to start thinking about how to keep the impending heating bills under control. Winter can be fun when you're out skiing down the slopes or choosing up teams for ice hockey on the pond. But when you get home you don't want to sit around shivering and watching your fingers turn blue. If you want to be cozy this winter without spending your life savings on fuel maybe it's time to get a new efficient boiler.
If your boiler is more than a few years old it could be running at about 60% efficiency. That means that nearly half of the fuel you are paying for is not keeping you and your house warm. New,energy efficient boilers are about 80 to ninety percent efficient. That means you use less fuel to get more heat and the savings shows up on your fuel bill.
If you decide to install a new boiler you should spend some time shopping around and talking to dealers and contractors. Find out what kind of boilers your neighbors are using and if they are happy with their choice. One thing you will need to consider is what kind of fuel ...
... you will be using.
Some people still use coal. It isn't considered very green but it's a viable option if you live close to a major anthracite mine. A more modern alternative fuel is wood pellets. These are little chunks that look like rabbit food. They are made out of compressed saw dust. They burn hotter and more evenly than traditional wood logs. Since they are made from the waste materials left over from lumber milling their use isn't environmentally unfriendly.
For most people fuel choices will be oil, natural gas or electricity. Prices for these fuels vary depending on where you live. You will need to investigate prices and see which one will work better for you.
At one time an electric boiler would have been unthinkable because electricity was prohibitively expensive. Today however electricity has become less expensive in many places and the other fuels have risen in price. Find out what is the most cost effective fuel where you live.
You should also consider the capacity of the boiler you are going to install. The one you are replacing may actually be bigger than you need. It may be costing you more money than you need to pay.
Many older homes have boilers that were bigger that necessary because heating fuels were cheap at the time. A big boiler will waste heat. It will cycle on and off more frequently than is necessary and parts will wear out sooner.
