The OSHA 30 Hour Training Courses promote a proactive approach towards fire safety and prevention. Their main priority is to reduce the risks that are associated with fire hazards.

Not many people are aware about this fact but, Fire Protection Services very often have a variety of technical documents, that can be found in the Federal Fire Protection Standards Policies and Technical Documents section. These documents are extremely important for they provide some sort of clarification on building and fire code requirements. These documents also provide fire loss statistics and they even give some form of guidance on a variety of fire safety topics.

In order to promote fire safety at the workplace, we need to first learn about the different sources and causes of fire. A fire prevention plan can only be put in place, once the sources have been detected. They are:

1.Open flames: Some examples of such unsafe conditions are: Negligence in conducting hot work, such as grinding or welding, improper use of candles, the improper handling of combustible or flammable liquids or gases in near-to-potential ignition sources ...
... and cigarettes and matches, that are improperly disposed off or left unattended to, near combustible substances.

2.Electrical: Some examples of such unsafe conditions are: These can include damaged plug wires, extension cords and electrical conductors, use of modified, faulty and unapproved electrical equipment, overloaded or short circuits, lighting and loose electrical connections.

3.Cooking: Some examples of possible unsafe conditions are as follows: Deep frying in pan and pots on stove tops, unattended cooking appliances, like an oven or a microwave and even an electrical rice cooker and combustibles that are located dangerously close to cooking equipment.

The Spontaneous ignition of waste materials and other highly flammable substances: Some examples of possible unsafe conditions are as follows: The improper disposal of materials and substances that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion, such as oily rags from wood polishing or finishing, the accumulation of organic materials and substances, such as wood ships, green hay and even grain, finally, the accumulation of combustible waste materials, near potential sources of ignition.

Now that we are aware of the common sources of fire hazards, we can develop a fire prevention plan around these sources. Fire safety planning plays a highly significant role in ensuring a sense of preparedness, in the event of a fire emergency. Fire safety planning, prevention and protection is extremely important, for it is one of the leading causes of fatalities, in the world.
