All You Need To Know About Personal Protection Equipment
The concept of Personal Protective Equipment or PPE has been introduced with a view of eliminating safety hazards. These equipments include hard hats, safety glasses, gloves and respirators that are specially designed to protect employees from workplace injuries. Although they protect employees from a hazard, it is good to remember that they do not eliminate the risk from the work site. OSHA addresses the use of PPE specifically for those workers who are employed in the general industry, marine terminals, construction jobs, shipyards and long shoring tasks.
It is the duty of the employer to provide appropriate protective equipments to their employees. Proper assessment of the workplace should be carried out to determine the kind of PPE that is required. These equipments should be stored and maintained in healthy and reliable conditions. Also, they should be accessible and ready to use in case of an emergency. There are various types of PPE that should be worn by employees. PPE can be designed to protect eyes, head, feet, hands, body etc. Also, life saving equipments can be counted as Personal Protective Equipments. Personal fall arrest systems are also included in this. It is necessary to see that the equipments are designed in an effective manner so that they can eliminate safety hazards. Their construction should be appropriate depending on the type of work that they will be used for. Say, for employees working at a shipyard, protective helmets that minimize electrical shock hazards should be used. Care should be taken to see if a PPE fits an employee properly. If an equipment is damaged, it should not be used and immediately replaced.
All employees are entitled to training so that they can protect themselves. Likewise, training on the use of PPE should also be provided to workers. The training should include things like when the PPE has to be worn, which type of PPE has to be used, the correct way of wearing the equipment, its limitations, maintenance and lifespan. It is a good practice to let the employees demonstrate their understanding of the PPE principles before they begin the job. When changes occur in the workplace, it is a good idea to consider retraining.
