When uric acid accumulates in a person's blood it forms into crystals that deposit into various joints of the body. This occurs most commonly in the big toe joint but also can affect the ankles, wrists, elbows, knees, shoulders, etc. This condition is known as gout, which is an arthritis-like inflammatory condition. The incidence of gout is becoming increasingly prevalent.

Episodes of gout are characterized by redness, swelling and warmth at the affected joint accompanied by pain that can sometimes be severe and debilitating. These episodes typically last hours but can last days and even sometimes weeks. If left untreated gout can lead to serious complications such as permanent joint damage and kidney impairment.

Gout treatment can include medications, which serve to either decrease the body's production or increase the body's elimination of uric acid, however often simple lifestyle modifications are all that is required to prevent future gout attacks. For instance drinking plenty of fluids will dilute the concentration of uric acid in the bloodstream as well as aid in the kidney's elimination of uric acid crystals. ...
... Stretching the joints frequently, a regular home exercise program and avoiding long periods in a fixed position will minimize the incidence of uric acid crystals settling into the joints.

Gout remedies can also be found in a number of everyday foods. Cherries and apples for example contain an enzyme that has been found to neutralize uric acid while lemons and limes act as a solvent to uric acid. Strawberries, raspberries and safflower have also been found to decrease overall uric acid levels in the blood.

The American Dietetic Association recommends only moderate consumption of protein, meat, fish and poultry, increasing fluid intake and avoiding of alcohol as effective in gout management. Avoidance of fructose, which is found in diet sodas, is also recommended.

Reducing inflammation at the affected joint is a major consideration in gout treatment and often a physician will prescribe a steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, however once again dietary modifications can be an effective alternative to pharmacological treatment.

Many foods provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Whole grains, nuts and even dark chocolate have a known anti-inflammatory effect. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli contain anti-inflammatory agents. Numerous herbs, most notably ginger and turmeric, provide anti-inflammatory benefits and are also known to aid in decreasing levels of uric acid. Fish and omega 3 fish oils have anti-inflammatory properties, however shellfish should be avoided as it increases uric acid levels.

Some foods are labeled pro-inflammatory, as they actually cause an increase in inflammation. Pro-inflammatory foods include potatoes, tomatoes, fast food, potato chips and foods high in concentrated sugars. Pro-inflammatory foods should definitely be avoided during episodes of gout.

Although gout is not considered a fatal disease it should definitely not be ignored. Gout attacks can be excruciatingly painful. Recurrent episodes of gout can lead to serious complications and impaired functional ability. Whether or not medication is used to decrease blood levels of uric acid dietary modifications are essential in the overall management and prevention of chronic gout.
