Appliance Testing

Any work involved with electrical appliances involves proper precautions for maintaining health and safety. Health and safety standards state that the appliance must be safe, to prevent physical damages to the workers. Testing of appliances at regular intervals ensures continual safety; the interval between tests depends on both appliance and the environment it is exposed to. Appliance testing is to test and tag electrical appliances for safety from electric shock and fire.
If you or your employees or contractors use any kind of plug-in electrical equipment, from power tools and computers to chillers and vending machines in your day to day business than it is highly recommended to undergo appliance testing at regular intervals to maintain the safety of your workers and also the longevity of your appliances. The appliances once tested are tagged for better understanding of the state of the appliance.
Evidence of testing is clearly visible in the form of 'Passed', 'Tested for Electrical Safety' and 'DO NOT USE after' labels affixed to various parts of the electrical equipment they use. Appliance Testing can be ...
... done by hiring an third party to test all the electrical products in a business or it can be done in-house by someone who has had some testing training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course offered by some electrical health and safety companies.
Safety Testing & Tagging of your electrical appliances means:
1. Proper maintenance of safety from fire and electric shock when your staff and clients use electrical appliances.
2. Compliance with Electrical Regulations that all necessary steps are taken to ensure Safety at work place.
3. To have a defense against personal prosecution in the event of an accident to staff or the public.
4. To comply with your insurance policy regarding reasonable care against appliance usage.
5. An edge over other business as far as safety and quality standards are concerned.
6. Safety certificates may be displayed at your reception and staffroom for better brand experience.
Below are few of the methodologies followed to perform appliance testing which may vary based on the class of the appliance.
1. Baseline numbers - this can be picked off from a manual or rule book if the test is in adherence to a standard kind of test. When the testing is done to calculate the effectiveness of an appliance, a load test is done without the appliance and values of identified parameters are recorded as baseline.
2. Identify environment and usage pattern.
3. The design lab and application flows on pattern, environment identified above.
4. Fourth step is to subject the appliance to 'load' and measure parameters.
5. Compare / publish / certify results as par the standards.
Appliance testing can be done by a registered electrical inspector or someone working under the supervision of a registered electrical inspector, who also has the required training and experienced of testing many appliances. A properly carried out appliance testing ensures your business is compliant with the relevant areas of safety legislation, but more importantly it ensures that you, your staff, customers and premises are protected in the knowledge that your electrical equipment is in a safe condition to use. Also there are laws that govern domestic appliances and their performance. Appliance testing is done to confirm adherence to these laws.
