When Apple released the iPad this last April, it was a milestone for the company.

It’s user friendly. It’s light and thin, weighing less than two pounds. You can check your email, browse Facebook or Google news, watch YouTube videos, read The New York Times and perform many other tasks for enjoyment. If you’re a business owner, this means you can update your website, chat with employees and make sure your business appears on the first page of Google search, all on your lap while lounging around on the couch.

In less than 100 days after releasing the iPad, Apple sold millions of this computer tablet in the United States alone. But nevertheless, it’s been a difficult first year for the iPad. Many critics complained about the many features omitted on the iPad such as a keyboard, webcam and the opportunity for multitasking, an essential component for online businesses. Many users who own laptops wondered if the iPad was even necessary in the first place.

... Apple with a lawsuit, saying the iPad 3G (as well as the iPhone) infringed on five of its patents.

These patents involve:

* Antenna configurations that allow for greater performance and more space
* Data transmission
* Enhanced speech
* Wireless data
* Encryption
* Security

Apple, in turn, started legal proceedings last month against Nokia concerning a lawsuit of its own. Apple said that Nokia, which is based in Finland, infringed on 13 of its own patents and filed the lawsuit in December. These patents also concern encryption, security, wireless data and more. The two heavyweight companies have gone to court for copyright infringement since October of last year over the iPhone.
