Before a person can decide on which tax return software is best for them, they must decide whether the return will be simple or complicated, and then determine the extent of their own knowledge of the tax return system. An example of a simple tax return can be described as one that includes one or two W-2s, reporting bank account or mortgage payment interest, with a few dependents. Once Schedules and various types of deductions enter into the picture resulting from conditions like self-employment, home business income or capital gains and losses, it's no longer a simple tax return.

It's highly advisable that those who choose to work with tax return software have at least a basic understanding of tax laws and how they apply to their tax circumstances. The greater the understanding, the easier it will be to navigate seamlessly through whichever software version is chosen. For those who are new at using this software, a good place to start would be one of the free-file programs. Free tax return software with limited features is now offered by all major software companies to everyone, regardless of their income amount. The ...
... IRS also has a free-file program which is partnered with established tax software companies but currently, its program is limited to those with income that is less than $57,000. Keep in mind that free versions of this software will only give limited assistance and guidance to users, and it's because of this that it's imperative that users have some tax experience of their own.

The more complex the return, the more a person should consider choosing tax software that offers considerable guidance and explanations to steer them through the process. The software that is most well known is from TaxAct, TurboTax and H - R Block.

TaxAct Free and Online Ultimate Editions
While TaxAct tax return software is simple and accurate, it isn't as detailed and sophisticated as the more expensive software. However, this might be expected since for its Ultimate Edition, TaxAct charges a fee of only $18 to file federal and state returns and no charge to e-file both federal and state returns. The Ultimate Edition is for the user with the more complicated tax scenarios but there are limits to the guidance, features and functions provided in comparison to other software sold at a higher price. However, the TaxAct editions have the significant advantage of offering every IRS form in the e-fileable format.

TurboTax Premier and Deluxe Editions
According to the majority of users, TurboTax tax return software has the most comprehensive tax return process. The Premier edition is specifically designed for users who have complex topics to deal with such as rental income and expenses, mortgage refinancing and business deductions. For approximately $80.00, a filer can prepare their federal and state income taxes and they can e-file their federal return for free. To e-file state income taxes, there is a $20 fee. The Deluxe edition is for users who have less complicated tax returns. This edition costs approximately $50.00 and it also allows the user to file federal and state returns with free e-filing for federal returns and a $20 fee for e-filing state returns. Many feel these prices are reasonable because of TurboTax's easy navigation software and the assistance given when dealing with complicated tax issues.

H - R Block at Home Free and Premium Editions
Though H - R Block isn't rated as high as TurboTax, it's still at the top of the list. The Premium Edition costs about $50 and the free version is free except for the $30 charge to file a state return.
