1998 Wsop: An Overview
The 1998 World Series of Poker was an event that had a lot of high expectations after the amazing event that had taken place the year before. The World Series of Poker in 1997 featured Stu Ungar's comeback from his drug addiction to play. He made his comeback with a bang and was able to take the whole tournament. That story had many hoping that Ungar would be able to shake his habit permanently.
Unfortunately Ungar was not able to play again in 1998. Just like in previous years, his drug addictions had come back to bite him again. This addiction was unfortunate and left a slight cloud of regret over the event in 1998. After the win the previous year it seemed that he would have the strength to overcome the issues that had plagued him for so long. That year Ungar would eventually pass away. The venue would later celebrate his life and accomplishments. Although he was not able to play and his death was imminent, there were many bright spots in the tournament.
Among the bright spots was the fact that the tournament continued to grow. There were 350 entrants in the tournament and the level of competition was higher ...
... than ever. The excitement surrounding the tournament was clearly growing and the popularity of the event was slowly preparing for the explosion that was to come.
With so many players at tables the field understandably narrowed very quickly. Certain players stood out from the rest of the field. These players included the like of Lee Salem, T.J. Cloutier, Kevin McBride, Scotty Nguyen and Dewey Weum. These players managed to mow down the competition en route to making it deep into the tournament.
As things progressed, these players were the last ones standing at the final table. While there were five players remaining at the table it was clear that the night could only belong to one of them. It was unclear as to which player would remain as Nguyen and McBride were left on the table. They battled in a number of hands until things came down to the last hand.
The last hand featured one of the famous lines of the history of the World Series of Poker. Nguyen felt like he had a good hand and said, You call this one and it's all over, baby. This was a bold statement from Nguyen, but McBride didn't buy it. He assumed that Nguyen was just bluffing and decided to call his bluff saying, I call. I play the board.
After that comment there was a load of excitement in the room, waiting to see which player would come out on top through the trash talk. As play continued Nguyen would pull out of reach from McBride, claiming the World Series of Poker championship for the year 1998.
This play between Nguyen and McBride has been remembered ever since. This was a classic moment in the history of the World Series of Poker that lives on today.
