Changes in the home occur when a senior loved one lives independently at home, or moves into a caregivers home. If you have made the decision to have your loved one move into your home, there are many important requirements that you must adhere to. The hardest part about having a senior loved one move into your home is having them feel as comfortable as possible as they transition into your home.

You will need to make many changes around the home to ensure the safety of your loved one. The initial changes are usually inexpensive and easy to do. You may want to do these simple projects before your loved one moves in, because they will feel more at-home when they items are implemented into your home. You will want to install grab bars in the bathroom near the toilet and the bath, and make sure to place non-slip mats under throw rugs to ensure safety. There are a lot of changes you can make to have your loved one as safe as possible. More expensive items such as stair-lifts, walk-in bathtubs, and guide rails will all be beneficial to your aging loved one. The bedroom and bathroom should be located near each other on the ...
... same floor, along with the kitchen, so that the senior does not have to use stairs on a consistent basis. Having no steps or stairs in the home is ideal as it will create less falling hazards.

Converting living space into a bedroom for your adult loved one can have its benefits. Some people may have a den, a storage room, or some empty room in the house that they can use for a bedroom. It is best to give your aging adult loved one privacy and their own room. Some caregivers are selling their aging loved ones home, so it may be ideal to sell their home and their loved ones home, and move into a new place that is more accessible and comfortable for everyone. These are huge decisions that you may be faced with when caring for a senior loved one.

Home is a place that is familiar, therefore, bring your senior loved ones favorite pieces of furniture into your home to help them transition into your home. It may not match your living space décor, but it is not about you, it is caring for your loved one. Your loved one may have a pet which you will want to allow in your house as a part of the family. You will make accommodations to better suit the needs of the pet as well, such as fencing the yard, having an area in the home that the pet stays, etc. Make sure to have a phone within access to your senior loved one. Giving your adult loved one access to either a home phone, or cell phone, will give them more independence and will help them feel connected with others.

Lighting in the home will have to be customized to fit your aging loved ones needs. As people age, it is necessary to have more light to avoid obstacles or hazards in the home. Having a safe home includes: furniture bumpers, bins for objects that may be in the seniors way, great lighting, wheelchair modifications, door and window sensors, doorknobs and window pulls for those with arthritis, accessible shelving, ramps instead of steps, chair-lifts, grab-bars, bath lift, anti-scalding water devices, and temperature controls. Some devices that will make your aging loved one more safe will include: baby monitors and walkie-talkies, personal emergency response systems, wrist monitors, adjustable bed, and a scooter or golf-cart for easy transportation outside.

When caring for an adult senior, it is important to know the adult home care requirements and to try and make your loved one feel as comfortable as possible in your home. Home care professionals can help you, the caregiver, in this transition as well. You have a lot of responsibility as a caregiver, but making the home more safe will allow for an easier care giving experience.
