Wood art as the name suggests, is any kind of art that is done using the primary medium of wood. These art forms are more often functional than decorative, and in turn is also a very unique gift.

Any kind of sculpting or carving that is done on wood is known as wood art, and there are two basic ways of doing this.

One is the normal way of wood working where the piece of wood is stationary and a sculpting or carving tool is used to give it different shapes, and another method is of wood turning where the sculpting or carving material stay still while the piece of wood is in motion according to the will of the artist.

Nowadays there are lots of electronic appliances and tools which have been invented for doing such a form of art, but it is always considered better an option if it is manually done as this gives the opportunity to the artist to show his skill, and make the work in fine details.

During the Middle Ages most of everything used, was made of wood, and they were finely crafted not only for its functional purpose but also for the artistic touch to it. These items have been excavated over time ...
... or have been passed down through generations as family treasures, and can mostly be bought at auctions or in antique shops.

It can be wonder at times to know what one can find in these antique shops.
Now wood art can range from a wooden almirah, having very little carving to a wooden chair, having carefully and finely crafted backrests which have intricate designs.

It can also be small items like boxes or candlestick stands or even artificial fruits.

These intricate works are normally crafted by individuals who have specialized in this form of art and are well skilled. They normally use a chisel to give shape and then drills to give beautiful carvings. To give the final finishing these items are painted.

The finest quality wood is used depending on the function of the art. That is, whether it is a mere decorative piece or has some other function.

In the latter case good quality wood that can absorb paints are used while in the former case sturdy wood that lasts long are used
This can be a very good and affordable form of a unique gift, as it gives a lot of character to the owner's house and also is very much functional.
