Road Legal Quad Bikes
The quad bike, or ATV, is basically the same as a motorbike, except it has four wheels instead of two and rides slightly lower. Gaining their popularity in the 70's, quad bikes have become more and more popular as the years have gone on.
Quad biking
Quad biking is traditionally an off road pursuit, that allows the rider to tackle bumpy dirt courses and tracks in a full on, adrenaline filled race environment. It is comparable to motocross and such bike related events, with the exception of being on four wheels rather than two.
However, in recent years, a new type of quad has become available: the road legal quad. This type of quad bike is completely road legal as it fits all the safety requirements that allow a vehicle to be used on a public road. This means that these types of quad bikes can be fully used on public roads as if they were motorbikes or cars.
You may however ask if a road legal quad is a viable option when there are cars and motorbike available. An ATV gives the rider a completely different feeling and set of experiences to riding a bike or driving a car, in addition to being easy ...
... to learn and use, when compared with the need to balance on a motorbike. In addition, it is extremely cheap to run, with the cost of filling up a tank of petrol being less than fifteen pounds on average, with a great fuel economy.
Top speeds
Additionally, quad bikes can reach speeds similar to those of cars and motorbikes, making them no slouch on public roads; with 250cc models reaching around 65mph. As with a motorbike, a quad bike will have a great level of acceleration, with easy manoeuvrability in small spaces. Insurance costs are also generally low, depending on your age. As well as this, many road legal quad bikes allow for an additional passenger to ride with the driver, giving great flexibility to the vehicle.
The main differences between non road legal quad bikes and road legal quad bikes, is that the road legal versions need to be registered with the DVLA, have an in date tax disk, insurance and an MOT. The bike must also have wing mirrors, working lights, and number plates in both the front and rear of the bike. You must also be of legal driving age (17).
When buying a road legal quad bike, you may wonder if it's possible to simply upgrade your existing quad bike to a road legal standard. While it is possible, it is not advised, due to the huge costs involved in the conversion. It is therefore simply not worth doing, and it is advised that you simply purchase an already road legal quad bike.
