Students often waste a great deal of money and time attending regional community colleges to complete basic general education requirements before enrolling at more prestigious, higher-quality colleges and universities. CLEP exams are designed to challenge the student to prove their knowledge in a specific area of study (usually to show that they possess knowledge equivalent to that of a student who has taken a one-semester course in the subject area). The majority of the CLEP exams allow ninety minutes for completion and consist of a number of multiple-choice questions. Some CLEP assessments, however, require students to complete an essay portion.

With the exception of some CLEP tests (French, Spanish, German, Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences/History, and the majority of the English CLEP options), colleges generally grant three credit hours per CLEP exam, provided the students achieves the minimum score required by the institution. The scores of a CLEP assessment usually range from twenty to eighty, with a fifty usually considered a passing CLEP score.
