Touring The Olympic Area Of Munich
The Olympic Area in Munich has built a global reputation for itself as home to a booming shopping center. I have visited many destinations in the world where shopping seems to be a mainstay but then the Olympic Area really holds some special memories for me probably because its activeness makes it easier to compare holidays with friends. Getting into Munich wasn't hard, at least considering the number of options open to me using flights. Although the train alternative was available, with the option of cheap flights to Munich, I just decided to stick to planes at least for this particular journey. Anyway, with the Munich International Airport winning awards for excellent service and the number of cheap flights to Munich, who wouldn't want to have the pleasure of landing there?
I entered the Olympic Area via the U1 and immediately set myself to the task of exploring the area but not before grabbing a bite. Now, if you are hungry for some nice and juicy pastry, I would recommend that you visit ...
... the Glockenspiel Café. Even without starting out on my explorations, I could view a great part of the area from the café's rooftop terrace. I just relaxed awhile there as I took some coffee and their delicious pastry.
Next on my itinerary was Tollwood. I had timed my visit to coincide with the summer festival and it was just as much fun as it promised to be. I thoroughly enjoyed the music and various theatre performances that were on display. Of course, performances were not all that the summer Tollwood had to offer as there were so many wares from different parts of the world also on display ranging from household items to international cuisine and drinks.
The following day seemed so full of promise that I was out of my bed even before sunup. I was really eager to see how the weather would turn out. Luckily for me, it was crystal clear. I wanted to have a bird's eye view of the city from the Olympic Tower (Olympiaturm). It stands over 200 meters in height and if the weather is as clear as it was on that day, you will enjoy a great view of the Alps. The Olympiapark which was constructed for use during the 1972 Summer Olympic Games still stands and remains a very active venue for various sporting and other events. One of the spots that continue to evoke sad memories and remains a grey spot in the recent history of the city is the 31 Connollystraße, the former Olympic village and venue of the massacre of Isreali athletes during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. A marker I saw there still indicates the building as the venue of this sad event.
Germany is also well known for its great honey and fruits. I decided to stop by the Viktualienmarkt to buy some fruits, drink some freshly made fruit juice and also get some honey. Munich without beer? How else would I compare holidays with my friends? That doesn't just sound right, so off I went at night to Schneeglöckchenstr.91 to have some fun and some great tasting beer. Amazingly, I also enjoyed some performances from American and Canadian country musicians right there.
