The Travel Narratives Depend On These Various Motivations And Interests

Some would be considered travelers with an explicitly stated purpose for their journey, while others would be considered strictly tourists seeking pleasure through the act of travel. Yet even among these categories, goals and interests varied. Travelers came to the region for business, government functions, or military service; tourists came for sightseeing, adventure, health, education, or the visitation of family and friends. Beyond the primary motivation for the trip, there are always a host of secondary motivations that also influence choice of destination and activities. As a result, a 'traveler' by definition quite often acts in a 'tourist' capacity throughout various stages of his or her journey. That the lines between categories of travelers are Merrell Sandal blurry at best has often been recognized. For example, Driver notes, "The business of the scientific explorer was not always, or easily, distinguished from that of the literary flaneur, the missionary, the trader or the imperial pioneer," while Johnston et al. emphasizes that "any (conventional) distinction ...
... between 'exploration,' 'travel' and 'tourism' is far from stable or secure."
The specific content of the travel narratives depend on these various motivations and interests. However, travel writers provided an enormous amount of information and discussed nearly every aspect of their voyage. This included sights, scenes, infrastructure, facilities, economic activities, political circumstances, cultural characteristics, racial concerns, gender issues, class distinctions, and more. Similar to other travel studies, it was necessary to limit analysis to a selected component within the travel narrative sources, in this case, descriptions of Merrell Boot landscape experiences. Consequently, this provided an additional restriction on the travel narratives included: the travel writers' itineraries necessarily involved a tour of at least part of the Caribbean Sea and a minimum stay of two weeks on one or more of the British Islands. This was important because it shaped landscape experiences. Viewing the landscape from the perspective of the ship was an integral part of travel during this time period. As ships typically did not stop at every island, or they stopped only long enough to exchange the mail, this was often the only means of experiencing the island. The island stay provided the opportunity to have a more direct experience with the landscape. Because visitors often felt the need to see as much as they could during their stay, they often made a tour of the island. The travel writers typically used a combination of modes of transportation to move through the landscape, including rail, carriage, horseback, and foot.
