An important skill that every offline consultant should learn of is local marketing. No longer will you be targeting the masses that you do in the online world. In fact, look at local marketing much in the same way you pick out a small profitable niche in the online world. You can also see it as specializing in online services which cater to a very specific region or area that requires it. However, the more important thing to bear in mind here is that by specializing in your own locality, you are able to deliver a distinct advantage over most of your other competitors who are based outside your area. The local businesses will greatly appreciate someone who understands the intricacies of your local business community and the different tweaks required in order to find success here.

Nonetheless, many offline consultants have a problem starting up their local marketing campaigns. This is not so much the result of local marketing itself being difficult but mainly due to the fact that they do not know where to begin. The basis of local marketing is simple. The first thing you will want to do is to place some ads in the local newspapers and magazines. Sure, these will cost some money but it is good to give you that extra exposure necessary within the local community. Always be certain to complement this with a good online advertising campaign. Pay per click advertising with geo targeting will work wonders here if you specify your local area. The exposure from the print or media ads will also serve to drive up the number of searches for your company name online and these can bring you extremely targeted online clicks.

Next, make a list of some of your local advertising companies and approach them. These companies often have people coming to them for full scale advertising campaigns. However, many of the more traditional ones do not have the capability to deal with SEO, SEM or even social media marketing. You can leverage on this and hopefully negotiate a deal that is mutually beneficial.

You will also want to seek out businesses which have synergy with yours and strike up similarly mutually beneficial deals. For instance, if you were in the business of providing SEO services, you can do well to seek out businesses which are focused on web designing. You can pass them web design deals while they pass you SEO deals. Both of you are likely to come across customers who require these services and it is always better to earn a small cut from these than to turn them away because you do not have the skills required.

Finally, never underestimate the power of word of mouth in local marketing. Tell all your friends and family about your business. You can also go one better and make some tweets or posts on social bookmarking sites.

Local marketing is all about reaching out to the local community. Failing to do so might result in far from optimal results in your offline consultancy business.
