Poker Tournaments Explained
Poker tournaments refer to progressive competitions where participants compete against each other in the purpose of gathering all the chips in play. With typical casino games, each hand is different from the other, and players have the freedom to quit whenever they please. In poker tournaments though, players can't call things off and cash out their earning preferentially - the competition carries on until there is a winner.
There are different variations of poker tournaments, among which the Elimination or freeze out type stands out as the most common. With this kind of structure, all subscribed players start out with the same amount of chips, and play continues until a participant manages to pool all the chips involved. As losing players exit the competition, the remaining contenders are reseated at progressively fewer tables.
Although the largest prize in the game goes to the player who ranks first, the common payout policy is to reward several other players as well. For instance, if a poker tournament starts out with one hundred players, the typical number of players eligible for collecting the total prize ...
... money would be ten, with the size of the prizes varying according to player achievements and placement in the leader boards.
Re-buy tournaments are variations where for a limited time, players who lose all their chips are allowed a second chance in the game thanks to the re-buy option. Re-buy poker tournaments typically involve highly aggressive play earlier on, as the players don't face the threat of elimination in case of a premature defeat. Due to the re-buy option, this category of tournaments invariably leads to the gathering of larger than average total prize pools as compared to standard tournaments with similar entry fees.
In shootout tournaments, tables aren't merged as players exit the competition; instead, each table plays down to a single winner, and each table winner in part advances to a final round. Therefore, if such a tournament originally begins with twelve tables, the first round automatically produces twelve table winners, who will subsequently face each other in either another shootout or elimination-style round until there is a tournament champion. Given their structure, shootout poker tournaments are typically shorter than regular elimination events.
Satellites refer to preliminary or mini-tournament poker games. They typically work as a qualifying round for bigger tournaments with higher stakes, allowing winners to advance to the main event.
And now, a few words about poker tournament strategy. Despite their high similarity to ring games, poker tournaments should be tackled differently from regular poker games. Since they bring the element of endurance to the game, most tournaments involve distinctive playing tactics and preparation.
Many elite tournament players come from the ranks of established ring game players who get most of their practice from ring games. For experienced and well-rounded players who favor a knowledgeable and tactful approach every time they play poker, making the logical strategy adjustments when jumping from ring games to tournaments becomes natural, smooth and easy. The key to gaining this ability lies in getting enough practice, so make sure you try your hand at as many poker games as you can before you take on tournaments. Through practice, you will be able to build your composure, concentration and decisions, which are all vital in any competition that's structured around multiple eliminatory rounds.
