Sometimes an air conditioning system will not work at peak efficiency, and this can be troubling as well as costly for your energy bill. There is a variety of issues that may cause a loss of efficiency, ranging from something very simple to a complete need for replacement of the system itself. A homeowner can do a little trouble shooting on their own, and when the problem cannot be identified, then call in a heating and air conditioning technician.

During the hottest or coolest seasons, especially in climates that have extreme weather changes, a heating and cooling system has to work fairly hard to keep the air in the home at the comfort level. The service tech who installs or maintains your system can tell you of the suitable temperature range for your system. It is unreasonable to expect most systems, even though they are competent for the job, to keep a home icy in the hottest weather, and your energy bill will probably reflect how hard your system has to work. General rule of thumb is to keep the home just comfortable, around 74 to 76 degrees in the summer, to prevent your system from having to push too hard. Some ...
... technicians may even recommend a temperature that is slightly higher. It will feel much cooler in the home than outside.

If your home is too warm and the system is apparently working, checking the air filter first is a smart idea. If it is dirty or needs replacing, this should be done immediately and on a regular basis. Regular cleaning or replacement of a filter not only helps unit efficiency, but also keeps the air in the home much cleaner. If a particular room suddenly seems to be warmer than normal, it is a good idea to make sure that the vents are not covered, closed, or obstructed in some way. This can be a major cause of a room being too hot, and can also cause the unit to work harder.
High humidity in a home is a sign of your system not functioning properly; this is true in humid areas too. A sudden spike in your power bill is an indication that your system is working very hard. A major part of your energy bills often come from your air conditioning system. Regular cleaning of the area around the filter, the compressor and the outside unit can prevent some problems, as well.

It is always safe to call in an air conditioning repair or service technician to do the trouble shooting for you, especially if your system is under warranty or when you are not quite ready to replace the system. Tinkering with a system without prior knowledge of how the system works can cause irreparable damage. A technician knows what to look for, such as improper home insulation, or blockages; this may prevent high costs in repairs. Listen closely to what he or she has to say, and provide what maintenance you can, to prevent your system from being overworked. When an air conditioning system loses peak efficiency, sometimes the problem can be solved by you, and sometimes you will have to call in the professionals.
