Palletising is defined as the preparation of freight in bags, cartons or other containers for easy movement. This is done by placing the containers on pallets which can be lifted and transported with a fork lift. Pallets of goods can be placed in trucks, railroad cars or marine vessels for ground or water transport.

In some cases, equipment has been developed that uses robotic devices to accomplish the packing and preparation of the pallets. Once loaded, the entire pallet may be covered with shrink-wrap or similar materials to provide additional protection from moisture, dust and shifting. Merchandise packed in this way is resistant to breakage and wear from movement during transport.

Since pallets are generally the same size, it is easy to know how many pallets will fit into a boxcar or a semi truck or the hold of a freighter. A competent fork truck driver can place loaded pallets snugly in place without bumping or scratching valuable merchandise. Depending upon the packaging and the merchandise that is involved, you can stack pallets more than one layer high.

Palletising is useful in many different types of operations from foodstuffs to hardware. Combined with mechanical conveyor belts and robotic machinery, it is safer than other means of packaging.
