Covert hypnosis is a concept of hypnotizing someone without even their notice. It could be therapeutically used as well in hypnotherapy where patients know that they are subjected to this hypnosis but in certain other cases, covert hypnosis might have been exercised on you even without your knowledge. That is the beauty of covert hypnosis; it is executed so smoothly that it is completely undetected. When you ask someone to do something in general, the response patterns are varied but when you are well versed with techniques in covert hypnosis, with your self confidence and conversational tactics you could transit the person in a suggestibility state such that they agree to everything you say.

Covert hypnosis has not much to do with body language than it has to do with your choice of words and the tone of speech. Persuading someone to bring about an action they would think that is rather impossible (but still much within their capabilities) needs a much required confidence built in you by the person being subjected to hypnosis. Generally, a lay man might take months or years to gain someone's confidence but a hypnotist ...
... usually needs just a few hours of hypnosis sessions to be able to persuade the subject in question to trust him enough to confide in him and accept his suggestions.

Our brain sends waves that are usually a mode of communication used by the ‘super' organ. These waves are generated in different frequencies; these waves are categorized as gamma waves (approx. 40Hz - high level of mental activity), beta waves (13-30Hz - intense concentration mode involving deep thinking and analysis), alpha waves (8-13Hz - subdued thinking, relaxed and calm state of the mind), theta waves (4-7Hz - extreme relaxed state or even day dreaming), delta waves (0.5 4Hz state of total relaxation i.e. state of sleep). Out of these phases, it's the theta waves sent by the brain that is much favorable for covert hypnosis to take place and also where the suggestibility mode of the brain is higher. This state of the brain during theta waves being transmitted is known as the trance state.

Usually, a professional, psychotherapist and hypnotist bring a subject in the trance state by first listening keenly into their thoughts and ideas. They may even touch the person to be hypnotized to show that they empathize with them. Gradually, when the hypnotist starts conversing with the individual with the kind of stuff they want to hear, this builds an essential rapport between the hypnotist and the subject. The hypnotist then uses positive suggestibility words in soft spoken sentences and gains the listener's confidence and slowly leads them into the trance state followed by which they start passing the message of concern to the person being hypnotized in a firm and confident manner such that it impinges on the subject's subconscious mind and once they are out of the trance, the subconscious mind is duly programmed to carry out the message delivered into productive action for their own benefit.

The International Conversational Hypnosis was formed to spread and teach Dr. Milton Erickson's ideas of Conversational Hypnosis. The Conversational Hypnosis website reviews the latest hypnosis courses, with a constant flow of new hypnosis articles.
