Periodontal diseases are a group of interrelated but very diverse inflammatory diseases involving the supporting structures that surround and anchor the teeth. Periodontitis affect the majority of adults at some point in their lives. Periodontal diseases comprise of two main classifications which are gingivitis and periodontitis. Both of these diseases are inflammatory conditions induced by plaque and are considered to be infectious.
Gingivitis is a reversible condition that starts when the bacteria in plaque cause inflammation of gums. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis. Gingivitis, which is inflammation of gingival tissues only, can typically be reversed with proper daily brushing and flossing as well as regular cleaning by a dentist or a dental hygienist.
Periodontitis is an irreparable condition that destroys the jawbone and can lead to tooth loss. Susceptibility to periodontal disease varies among one individual to another, and can be due to genetic factors, poor body resistance, improper or inadequate nutrition, and environmental as well as behavioral factors. Some are more prone to periodontal ...
... disease than others although this does not mean that acquiring the disease will be impossible.
Symptoms of gingivitis usually include redness, swelling, bleeding upon touch, spontaneous bleeding, and/or visible abscess. A dentist Hanahan has would usually say that these signs can be observed after ten to twenty days of plaque accumulation.
A dependable Goose Creek dentist would agree that gingivitis can be classified into two varieties, those affected by local factors and those that are affected by local factors and modified by specific host systematic factors. At the local level, frequent consumption of sugar can be responsible for increased plaque accumulation and gingivitis. Modifying factors for gingivitis include metabolic, genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. Other factors that can alter gingival inflammation responses include immune deficiencies and psychological stress,
Gingivitis may treat itself or lie low for an uncertain period. However, the possibility for periodontal pocket formation exists at anytime. When these pockets are detected clinically, they typically are related with calculus existing on the tooth's root surfaces. The development and progression from gingivitis to periodontitis requires varying amounts of intervals in different individuals, and may not happen at all in others, according to licensed Dorchester dentists and dental experts.
