Urban succession and racial/ethnic transition often lead to high levels of segregation. For several decades, Detroit was noted as one of the most highly segregated cities in the US. Although numerous studies have been conducted concerning white attitudes toward blacks in their neighborhoods in Detroit, little is known about the attitudes of whites toward Hispanics in Detroit. However, several studies have documented more tolerance on the part of non-Hispanic whites for Hispanics in US cities in general. Other recent studies have also shown that non-Hispanic black segregation levels have declined while Hispanic segregation levels have stagnated (Iceland 2002).
