Depression And Self-hatred
The primary source of depression is self-hatred, which can also be defined as SELF-JUDGMENT. Depression cannot exist without this primary symptom. Judgments are not to be confused with FACTS. Judgment lies at the center of your depression and REALITY is the CURE. Self-judgments can be described as comprising the following:
=> 1. DICHOTOMIES: Judgments only offer a black and white view of the world, with no shades of gray. Things can either be attractive/unattractive moral/immoral, or superior/inferior.
=> 2. COMPARISONS with associates or a perfect self: Compared with her I'm ugly or compared with how beautiful I should be, I don't measure up.
=> 3. AN IDEAL SELF that you should measure up to. Ideals are hazardous because they represent appearances of perfection that are unattainable for ACTUAL human beings to achieve. As an actual human being, you don't get to select which sensations and experiences you want based on what's acceptable to you - like it or not you get the whole lot, warts and all!
=> 4. THE SHOULD and musts of inner dialogue are potent signs of self-judgment.
=> 5. ARBITRARY, ...
... VAGUE, GENERAL: Judgments are unsound, inexact, have no basis in reality and are not calculable. What's the purpose of labeling yourself as hopeless, dumb, pitiable or anything else? If we consider how to assess the actual truth of a judgment, might we be able to use a specific measure, like amount of tax paid, to decide if the label without value actually does apply? The futility, pointlessness, meaninglessness of these statements is clear.
=> 6. PERVASIVE, REPETITIVE AND SHORTHAND: Self-judgments use shorthand, quick, easy, phrases that are highly memorable and repeat like a mantra but are very low on truthfulness.
=> 7. CONSCIOUS & UNCONSCIOUS: Self-judgment is sly: sometimes it is recognizable but mostly it is masked. Unfortunately the most controlling and invasive saboteurs of your mental health are the unconscious forms of self-hatred, which can only be reigned in using competent professional help.
WATCH OUT! Self-hatred can murder its victims! Here is a current article printed in the West Australian Online. It shows how a skewed, self-hating perspective can bring about a person's untimely death.
Charmaine Dragun, a famous news anchor who was ill with depression for 10 years, died by jumping from a Sydney cliff in 2007. In a cut-throat industry, Charmaine couldn't afford to let any frailty show for fear of being overthrown by other pretty rivals who had their claws out to get the job. She didn't want to be seen as someone who couldn't cope. A press report that she judged the worst ever was highly praised as remarkable by TV executives. She missed the reality that she was extremely capable and articulate by harshly denying and down-playing her true abilities. She was anxious she would be sacked because the public and executives did not like her. Her friends knew she was truly brilliant but they couldn't make her believe of that fact. She saw no particular merit to her job and minimized it as boring and just reading words that others had written.
In fact, this is the truth:
Charmaine Dragun was a bright and beautiful, rising star of the news world that was also highly intelligent and accomplished. Friends and colleagues esteemed her and her bosses admired the standards of her work. They were keen to see her do well for a long time. She had a responsible and professional approach and was always well-presented, well-groomed, and elegant. Senior management selected her in preference to many others because of her hard work and aptitude. She was truly blessed with unique gifts and favorable opportunities. Her loved ones will miss her terribly.
Recovering from depression requires a whole-hearted devotion and commitment. Those who suffer from depression have to replace distorted and hateful self-judgments with a profound understanding of actual reality. This is not just an intellectual exercise but an embodied, holistic and profound process that can only be accomplished with the help of an experienced professional.
