The assurance that the rendering would be 'the work of scholars' seemed to guarantee respectability (even if the word 'unprocurable' struck a somewhat clandestine note), and Ellis and Symons together with Ernest Dowson, Alexander Teixeira de Mattos (1865-1921), Percy Pinkerton and Victor Plarr (1863-1929), young authors of varying renown each signed their own translation. But superior phrase-making was not the Lutetian Society's main aim; that lay quite clearly in the restoration of material that Vizetelly had omitted, as the above excerpt demonstrates.
