Nora Ephron screenwriter, director, novelist, humorist, wife, mother, and ardent home cook has written and directed a new movie, Julie & Julia, opening this month. It's the story of three talented, unusual women and a stew. The women are Julia Child, Julie Powell, and Nora herself, and the stew is boeuf bourguignon.

For nearly as long as I can remember, I have envied Nora Ephron. That doesn't quite capture it. It's not the kind of envy that makes me wish she'd walk under a falling safe. That level of envy I reserve for Cushion tiffany other people. No, I envy Nora for her writing talent and her comic voice, and I have envied her in this way since I first met her a generation ago, over lunch at a now-defunct Egyptian restaurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan whose name I forget. If the food had been good, I'm sure I would remember the name.

Nora has written one novel, Heartburn, the thinly disguised story of the breakup of her second marriage. I reread it a few weeks ago, and there was hardly a sentence I didn't find either totally funny or at least sweet and sour and moving. And then there are Nora's twelve (now thirteen) screenplays, for which she and her collaborators have earned three Academy Award nominations.
