Sure, many folks may believe that reality TV began in the last few years, but many people also believe that Allen Funt began it all with his 1948 television series "Candid Camera" and should be given the credit that is due to him for spawning the immensely popular genre. Nobody would disagree to the fact that reality television is the ultimate peep show.

The reality TV classification must be used to categorize 1950's shows. What are the options for saying "Truth or Consequences", To Tell The Truth", or "What's My Line"? Some of us may call them "game shows," but in fact, they were truly reality television.

Reality shows on television have got much expansion over the years. The genre has gotten larger since TV's 40's and 50's beginnings.

There are currently eight separate reality TV shows on each of the "big four" networks. (ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX). Those networks are not the only ones that felt the expansion of reality television. Each and every channel is on the lookout for some great reality television shows, cable centers just grab such programs having top shows like "The Deadliest Catch", "Monster Garage", "Top Chef", etc. These are only a few on the big long list.

Reality TV shows have expanded to include so many categories, from documentaries, to scientific endeavors, dating shows, criminal justice, talent searches, and many more.
