The company was founded by the Peugeot family in 1810 in Sochaux, France and even today Peugeot still has a large manufacturing plant and museum in the area.

Although it was founded in 1810, it was not until 1858 that the lion brand trademark was given not until about 1890 that the corporation tried to make their first cars.

Within this premature phase of Peugeot's story they demonstrated of development as in 1889 they only developed four cars but they were making 300 more just ten years later.

The uncomfortable nature of this group of cars led to the decision that the wheels should be covered in rubber to lessen the impact caused by an uneven road surface. As a result, Peugeot became the first car manufacturer to place rubber on their tyres.

About thirty years later the firm had become much stronger and in 1929 the Peugeot 201 was launched, which was the least expensive production car available to buyers in that period. This model played a significant part in securing Peugeot through the years of the Great Depression and saw them still in business after the depression subsided.

After the war, ...
... Peugeot started production on the 202 and manufactured over 14,000 vehicles. The model was released again as the 203 in 1947, with hydraulic-powered brakes, suspension and innovative steering tools. The prosperity of this model secured fantastic sales number and subsequent adapted models until the 1960's.

Almost two decades later Peugeot designed and released the Peugeot 205 in the year of 1983, which helped the firm to secure its position as a global manufacturing giant.

As of 1993 Peugeot released the 306, which was a small and extremely popular vehicle that was made for family use and was produced until 2001 when the 307 was launched. Yet, the model continued on until 2002 as an array of cabriolets and estate versions were put on the market.

The firm also experienced international rallying success, especially during the World Rally Championship with the 4WD turbo-charged versions of the Peugeot 205, and more recently the Peugeot 206.

Throughout the mid-1990s, the Peugeot 406 saloon played a part in car championship tours in a bunch of countries, enjoying success in France, Germany and Australia. However, in other races the model was not as successful, due to teething problems with horsepower and suspension complications, in battling with the likes of leading cars from Honda and Nissan. The next phase came when Peugeot put three of its 406 coupes into the 2001 touring car championship in Britain and had to race with Vauxhall Astra coupes.

More recently, the company has developed a diesel-electric hybrid Peugeot 307 that can achieve an impressive 80 mph, which makes it one of the best cars on the market in terms of fuel efficiency. Nevertheless, this was purely a concept automobile and was never made available to purchase or drive as part of Peugeot leasing pact.

The Peugeot PROLOGUE HYmotion4 and hybrid electric power train technologies are being created by Peugeot at the moment. Currently, these have only been inputted into concept vehicles, nevertheless they could play a big part in the firm's future plans.
