Floodplain Management And Water Damage In Ohio

Ohio has an ongoing program called The Floodplain Management Program, which provides advice and information on the reduction the impact of flooding. Emphasis is given on floodplain management and to the coordination of the National Flood Insurance Program. The staff associated with the program recommends management methods that help reduce water damage in Ohio and promote the natural benefit of floodplains.
The headquarters of the program also serves as the state repository for data on floods as well as a coordinating center on efforts made by the federal, state, and local agencies involved in flood loss reduction programs. In addition to this, the program assists neighborhoods in gaining and maintaining eligibility for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Floods are a natural part of life, especially when the property is near streams & rivers. It usually happens when streams overflow their banks and spill to the nearby land area, called a floodplain. Thus, an effort to reverse the trend of rising flood damage is important. Local, state, and federal establishments need to have a variety of programs that can be keep the residents safe and secure. Examples of what can be done include the construction of dams, levees, and floodwalls and flood disaster relief through tax adjustments.
