Kenya’s Mt. Longonot Crater Offers A Quick Fix Sporting Activity
How fit are you?
A visit to Kenya with its great famous wildlife in the Masai Mara the beautiful flamingoes of Nakuru and the lazing ocean waters in the coast and other attraction are on most travelers’ wish list. Sporting in Kenya has also become a major phenomenon not to ignore noting that most athletes who have won many championships in the world come from Kenya. As much as these athletes have professional training grounds referred to as High Altitude training centers most travelers unless with prior planning many never get to reach nor experience them, and in addition if you are not a professional runner why do bother anyway? But then the little though of have for the local citizens may as well be introduced to the travelers as an alternative to a sporting activity which can be done in one day.
The Mt. Longonot crater is a non-active volcanic site – its boast of a circumference of 12kms each was ascending is 6kms, thus if you are fit enough you can do over 20kms proper work out in 1 day. Local people know it as a secret well ...
... kept. Its management the Kenya wildlife Services (KWS) charges some fees for entry and there are some camping sites around the vicinity of the mountain. The crater is 1 hours drive from Nairobi you will need about 4-6hours to go up the mountain-round the crater and back down. To be honest the descending is much challenging that the ascending – but again what goes up must come down-law of gravity. If you are physically fit you can take less than 3 hours.
There is a local myth that was once told 'that once you are on top of the crater you may see some people tilling the land and that is why some comes from below' well it’s just but a myth but indeed smoke do come out of the crater and you can see it very clearly. The breathtaking site while on top of the crater can be of outmost use to photographers’, Smithsonian students and movie makers. Other groups that would be interested are students, scouts or guides, team building activities, gym clubs and travel clubs. Good Luck for your Kenya wildlife safari tours.
