Types Of Steam Valves
What is the one thing that kettles, boilers and industrial heating systems have in common? Steam. We use steam everyday for a variety of purposes such as energy storage, sterilization, and generating electricity. Steam is also used in machines like steam engines and steam turbines.
When setting up a boiler or other types of industrial heating systems, there are several components that you need to have in order to handle the heated water vapor. One of those components are steam valves. Steam Valves control the flow and pressure level of steam and are made from materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze iron, or steel.
Steam valves have different methods of propulsion, or actuation. They can be opened or closed manually. Electric and pneumatic valves are probably the most commonly used as they are the most available. Electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic servo valves are actuated through the use of an electrical signal. And then we have thermally-actuated valves which react to changes in temperature.
There are numerous types of steam valves with varying functions. One of the more basic valves are Angle valves, ...
... Ball valves and Bellow valves. Other valves such as the Check valve, a self-activating safety valve, prevent the flow of steam from reversing direction while Pinch valves and globe valves provide control turn on, off, or speed up the process flow.
There are valves that use or have discs as components to help the control the flow of steam. Butterfly valves and Poppet valves are such examples. Plug valves also known as stop-cock valves raise or lower a cylindrical plug, delivering immediate response and precise modulation of steam flow. Diaphragm valves, gate valves, regulators, servo valves, solenoid valves, spool valves, and toggle valves are other examples of steam valves.
