Around the same time, European immigrants were beginning to settle in the region. In the 1850's the Scrantons realized there was money to be made in the coal industry and began to concentrate on the mining and transportation of that resource. The efforts of the Scrantons led to the formation of the famous Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad.

The Borough of Scranton, named after its founders, was officially incorporated in 1856. In 1863, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company built a steam railroad that entered Scranton. Then in 1866, the boroughs of Providence and Hyde Park were merged with Scranton incorporating Scranton as a city. In 1878, the citizens of what is now Lackawanna County voted for the creation of a new county, seceding from Luzerne County. Scranton became the county seat of Lackawanna County.
