Gibraltar Toll - 'a Type Of Internal Customs Post Remindful Of Medieval Times'-00-7520
The Spanish Government has taken the initial steps to attempt and block the proposed 5€ toll thought up by the Partido Popular Mayor of La Linea, to be implemented on those who want to visit Gibraltar.
The Government has started legal proceedings against the works being carried out by the La Linea Town Hall in preparation for the charge, which have already including imposing a diversion on lorries heading for the Rock. On Tuesday lorry drivers complained of delays of 45 minutes as a consequence. New signs have also been erected which read ‘La Linea is also Spain'.
Initially the State Advocacy is appealing against the installation of two traffic signs which stop direct admission to the border, forcing all vehicles instead to join the same queue, and the State is also calling for the immediate suspension of the municipal agreement underneath which the toll is planned.
The State lawyers look at that the municipality has entered into areas which are the competence of the State. It also notes that lorries with dangerous loads would also be forced into the same access queue, describing the Town Hall's ...
... plan as ‘a type of internal customs post reminiscent of medieval times' and already prohibited in current law. The State, it continues, is defending the public interest in the free circulation on national roads and throughout frontiers.
Meanwhile Spanish unions have requested a meeting with the Gibraltar First Minister, Peter Caruana, who they hope will support their protests against the modern toll. Meanwhile they would be immune from the charge underneath the Mayor's plans, they look at the stop could result in occupation losses.
The PP Mayor of La Linea, Alejandro Sánchez, continues to call for ‘a structural solution' to the difficulties of his municipality, which already faces a venture from the Rock ‘Not a penny in La Linea' calling on Gibraltarians not to spend any money over the border in the Spanish town.
The Junta de AndalucÃa has also criticised the idea of a toll, but announced on Tuesday that it would be promoting 2. 5 million € to La Linea Ayuntamiento. The money is to be used to pays the wages of council workers.
