Credit Bureau Dispute Letter
Writing to a credit bureau does not have to be as intimidating as many people make it out to be. Really, it’s not you are simply asking to dispute a problem that they have made. Writing a credit bureau dispute letter is easy, and helps to keep them on their toes they are not perfect.
There are two absolute musts when addressing the credit bureau in order to make any headway and those are to be polite and factual. It is true that they have to address anything that comes across their desk but they will be more inclined to make a favorable decision towards you if you succeed on both points.
When you are writing a dispute letter to a credit bureau, you are doing it for one of two reasons. One is because you were recently turned down for credit, and found that there was a problem at that particular bureau. The other reason is that you are trying to repair your credit.
Gather your facts first before you sit and write the letter. Know that your denial of credit, if that is the reason why you are writing, is due to this credit bureau. Then make a simple direct statement of what the letter is about ...
... in one opening sentence.
Next should be the paragraph in which you explain what you are disputing. Also explain why you are disputing it, and that has had a negative outcome on your life. Then tell exactly how that negative outcome has occurred as a result. Be very, very specific.
When you are being specific about the type of credit that was denied to you, be sure to enclose documentation to prove that your denial was because of that credit bureau. In that same credit bureau dispute letter, also be sure to tell the credit bureau just how embarrassing it was to you to be denied.
Insert a gentle reminder that with the included proof, they’ll have to agree that the mistake needs to be remedied immediately or as quickly as possible.
List in detail what exactly you are disputing. Ask for verification and/or deletion from your report. Simply list it as “Creditor 123 ABC Agency, Account number 187463†or whatever the creditor is.
Write a rough draft of the letter, making sure that you say everything you want to say in it. If you haven’t, figure out where you want to put it, and work it in smoothly during the rough draft before you write the final draft. If needed, you can write a second rough draft.
Write the final draft of the credit bureau dispute letter. Be clear and concise, stating your point in a logical clear order. Facts will help get your point across, and proof that you have been wronged will be even more beneficial.
No matter what, don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself. Credit bureaus do make mistakes, and you have to help them along. Write a dispute letter, and see what happens.
