We decided to return to Lausanne after so many years and the occasion was the celebration of our wedding anniversary. Why did we choose Lausanne? Well, my wife and I went to school in that great city and it was while we were schooling at the prestigious University of Lausanne that met. Lausanne therefore seemed just the ideal destination for our anniversary.

Since we wanted to get airline tickets Switzerland provided nice options; the closest airport to Lausanne is the Geneva Airport where there are so many flights coming in from different parts of Europe. It is quite easy to connect Lausanne from here via train. This was our preferred option but then there is still the alternative of using the Zurich International Airport which incidentally records more trans-Atlantic flights than the Geneva Airport. Either option provides travelers with the cheapest airfare.

... station was as breathtaking as I could recall and from the look on my wife's face, it was obvious that she shared those thoughts. Memories are indeed strange and powerful thingsor emotions. This city has been home or played host to a number of people in the creative arts especially the popular place known as the ‘Swiss Rivera, actually Lavaux.
The roll-call includes Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway as well as Lord Byron. These are not the only reason for Lausanne's international outlook; the city also plays host to so many students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The largest university, University of Lausanne has sufficient pedigree to attract the best students from anywhere in the worldI and my wife included. Lausanne is also bursting at the seams with private academies and language schools. Where would the world be today without the graduates of the most famous training for chefs and hotel staff, Ecole Hoteliere? I say (tongue in cheek) that the hospitality industry will be the worse for it! Well, that is just my enthusiasm getting the better of me (or is it?).

Actually, a lot has not changed in Lausanne and we were able to relieve old memories. The Palaise de Rumine still stands, not that I expected it to grow legs and walk off. We made sure to see the exhibitions in each of the five museums it houses. The Sauvebelin tower wasn't about escape our attention, certainly not with the 3600 viewpoint it offered us of the Alps and Lake as well as the Jura.

I'll tell you one new thing that I noticed though; skateboarding. I mean, skateboarding is not totally new to Lausanne but the depth of the passion for it begs for more than passing notice. As we strolled, we kept seeing skateboarding enthusiasts zipping past us. I guess the massive student population with contemporary leaning is responsible for this. Out on the Ouchy Lakefront, as we relaxed, the skateboarders thrilled us with their skills and just for a moment I wished we had this kind of during our time. If only wishes were horsesIf you think that these earnest skateboarding aficionados are alone in their love for the sport then you should know that the locals spurned the opportunity of hosting the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in favor of the annual International Roller and Skateboarding Contest.
