Well I've got time on my hand Don Williams' lyrics resonated in my mind as I thought of the airline tickets Switzerland bound airlines were offering. Well, the Bernese Highlands or Oberlands is one of the most delightful places that you can possibly visit in this lifetime. Even if you aren't a fan of nature, I guarantee you an instant conversion and lifelong membership of nature's fan club. Besides, if you are an active reader of detective novels, surely you must be familiar with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It might interest you to note that it was in this part of Switzerland that the most famous detective in literary history ‘died'. Yes, it was specifically in one of the villages, Meiringen that Sherlock Holmes perishedat least until Sir Arthur Conan Doyle decided to bring him back to life. Anyway back to the Bernese Highlands, the beauty is simply hard to express sufficiently in words. Needless to say, all you just need is the cheapest airfare andyou're there!

If you still don't know where the highest railway station in Europe is located, you will need to jump on the train and take a ride to Interlaken. This village is quite easily one of the most famous tourist spots in Switzerland and is ideally sandwiched between Brienz and Lake Thun. Niederhorn is another spot that you can visit from Interlaken, mostly because of the exotic animals you'll get to see there; chamois, marmots and ibexes. Brienz on the other hand is home to the Ballenberg Open-air Museum, one of the world most popular living history museums containing over 100 reconstructed homes and providing practical demonstrations of how Swiss pastry, cheese and even traditional artifacts are made. Afteror before visiting the open-air museum, try the Swiss School of Wood Sculpting to see samples of Swiss woodcraft. The Giessbach Falls offers you one of the best scenarios for capturing nature in water form. Lake cruises are also available as is the view from Briezer Rothron which is above 7, 000 feet.

If you're going there in the winter, don't miss out on Europe's longest sledding trail and even if you commit the ‘tourist offence' of missing that, surely you can compensate with the snow-tubing, snowboarding, sleigh rides and other sports that just abound by that time.
