What Do Dates, Peanut Butter, Sattu And Honey Really Add To Your Smoothie?
A banana and glass of milk will give you around 255 calories. If you add two spoons of peanut butter, 3 dates and a sprinkling of honey you’ll get around 710 calories. Everything in this example looks healthy!
Why add-ins matter more than the fruit
Most people think about the fruit when they think about smoothie calories. In reality, the base is usually the small part. A banana is about 105 calories, and a cup of whole milk is about 150. The add-ins are where the numbers jump, because they are dense foods that go in by the spoonful and disappear into the blend. You don’t chew them, so you never feel how much you’ve eaten.
Numbers per add-in
These are approximate values based on USDA FoodData Central:
Peanut butter, 2 tbsp (32g): 190 calories, 7g protein, 3g sugar
Medjool dates, 3 pieces (72g): 200 calories, 1.5g protein, 48g sugar
Sattu, 2 tbsp (20g): 70 calories, 4.5g protein, 1g sugar
Makhana, 30g: 105 calories, 3.5g protein, under 1g sugar
Honey or jaggery, 1 tbsp: 64 calories, 17g sugar
Chia seeds, 1 tbsp (12g): 58 calories, 2g protein
Rolled oats, ...
... 3 tbsp (30g): 115 calories, 4g protein, under 1g sugar
Add-in by add-in
Peanut butter
It is the most calorie-dense item on the list per spoon. Two tablespoons give a decent 7g of protein, but it comes with about 16g of fat. A heaped spoon can easily be double the measured one, so level your spoons.
Dates
Dates are a natural sweetener, but they are mostly sugar and calories. Three Medjool dates add about 200 calories and 48g of sugar. The smaller Indian khajoor have fewer calories each, so count pieces by size, not just by number.
Sattu
Sattu is roasted gram flour, and it is one of the best value add-ins here. Two tablespoons give about 4.5g of protein for 70 calories. It also thickens the smoothie and gives a mild nutty taste.
Makhana
Makhana blends into a creamy texture and adds bulk with very little sugar. A 30g portion is around 105 calories. Dry roast it lightly first, so it blends smoothly.
Honey and jaggery
Both are pure sugar with almost no protein or fiber. One tablespoon of honey adds 64 calories. If the smoothie already has dates or ripe banana, you rarely need it.
Chia seeds and oats
These add fiber, which slows digestion and keeps you full longer. They are the easiest way to make a smoothie more filling without adding much sugar.
The calorie creep example
Base smoothie: 1 banana (105) + 1 cup whole milk (150) = 255 calories.
Which add-in suits your goal?
Weight loss
Pick sattu, makhana or chia. They add protein and fiber without many calories. Skip honey if you use dates.
Muscle gain
Peanut butter and sattu do the most work for protein. One calorie-heavy ingredient is usually enough, and you can build the rest of the calories from milk and oats.
Pre-workout
Dates and banana give quick energy. Keep peanut butter out of this one, since fat slows digestion and can leave you feeling heavy during training.
How to work out your own smoothie
Your blender glass will not match the example above, so the easiest habit is to add it up yourself. Use a kitchen scale or measuring spoons for each add-in, write down the calories from the pack label or the list above, and add them to your base. Once you have done it for your usual recipe, you can reuse the number every day.
