Back in 1979, Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne were two twenty-something artists sitting in London with knitting needles, some skeins of pure wool, and a modest market stall in Covent Garden. They had zero formal business backing or high-fashion connections. They simply wanted to make knitwear with personality—playful, bright, and slightly quirky. Neither could have guessed that one particular red knit with rows of little white sheep and a single black sheep would spark global fashion hysteria. Today, the legendary Warm and Wonderful sweater remains one of the most celebrated garments in British pop culture history.

The real breakthrough happened on an ordinary afternoon in June 1981. Lady Diana Spencer, nineteen years old and weeks away from her royal wedding to Prince Charles, showed up to a polo match wearing it. Muir and Osborne didn't even know she owned one. In fact, they only found out when a customer walked into their shop with a morning newspaper featuring Diana plastered across the front page. Overnight, their tiny studio was buried under piles of international orders. Mail poured in from everywhere, and the ...
... two friends scrambled to meet an insatiable demand for novelty knitwear.

The letter, the snag, and the second sweater

Then came an unexpected twist in late 1981. Diana's private secretary, Oliver Everett, wrote a polite letter explaining the Princess had caught the sleeve and damaged it. He asked if it could possibly be repaired. Instead of mending the snagged yarn, Sally and Joanna decided to knit her a brand-new replacement. If you look closely at that second version, the designers actually reversed the orientation of the lone black sheep. Diana wore this second sweater out to Guards Polo Club in June 1983, pairing it with a crisp collared shirt and ribbon tie. It was a cheeky, confident statement that made headlines all over again.

Championing independent British knitwear

It is easy to focus purely on royal glamour, but this story is really about independent British creativity. Sally and Joanna were not established couture figures with Mayfair storefronts. They were working makers who designed with humor, grit, and heart. Diana loved supporting inventive young talent, frequently turning to colorful cottage-industry pieces over formal palace dressing. Her repeat endorsement turned a simple wool jumper into a symbol of personal self-expression and gentle defiance. You can learn more about how Sally and Joanna built their brand in our Designers gallery, celebrating the independent artisans who shaped 80s British fashion history.
