Paid, Closed, Still Written Off: Why Clearing A Loan Doesn't Always Clear Your Credit Report

There's a particular frustration in doing everything right and having the record say otherwise. You paid the loan, perhaps even received a closure letter, but your credit report still says Written-off or Settled, or shows the loan as active.

Paying a lender and the lender updating a credit bureau are two separate steps. Here are five cases from our files that show what can go wrong.

Paid in January 2025, Still Live in August 2026

Loshin, in Ernakulam, paid off a loan on his RBL Bank credit card in January 2025. Nineteen months later, his report still showed an outstanding balance and no closure date, despite recording his last payment in January 2025. The lender had kept certifying the account as open.

Our analyst Smitha N got it re-reported as closed and corrected two other running loans he asked us to handle. His score rose from 727 to 761. He chose not to pay four older settled accounts, so we left those unchanged. Whether to pay the remaining difference is the borrower's decision.

Settled in 2012, Still Tagged in 2026

Madhu, also in Ernakulam, had two car loans from 2007, both closed ...
... in 2012 but still marked Settled fourteen years later. His score was 738.

On his Kotak loan, the dues had already been paid and the tag was outdated. On his ICICI loan, an amount remained pending. Our analyst Vaidhehi P disputed the Kotak status, but the bureau rejected it. After Madhu paid the ICICI balance, its dispute was also rejected. Both statuses changed only after escalation to the lenders.

A bureau sends a dispute to the lender. If the lender does not confirm a change, the bureau may close the dispute without correction.

No NOC, No Receipt, Still Corrected

Praveen, an ex-serviceman in Ernakulam, was repeatedly denied an education loan because an IDFC First Bank loan from 2013 remained marked Written-off with overdue dues. He believed he had paid it, but had neither an NOC nor a receipt.

Instead of relying only on a bureau dispute, Vaidhehi contacted the bank and raised a formal complaint asking it to review its records. About a week later, the status was corrected and the overdue amount became zero. His score rose from 676 to 722.

Settled, Then Sold, Then Reported Written Off

Mahesh, in Bengaluru, settled and paid a Bajaj Finance loan in 2023. The account was later assigned to Kotak Mahindra Bank and reported as Written Off, with overdue amounts continuing to appear.

When analyst Supraja escalated the case to Bajaj's Nodal Officer, the lender said more was due. She then raised the matter with the RBI and PMO. A review established a lender reporting error. His record was corrected, he received ₹5,000 compensation and was later sanctioned a ₹20 lakh loan.

Paid, Closed, and Honest About What Stays

David, in Hyderabad, had a Kotak card and an HDFC loan both reported Written-off. Analyst Aradhana Prasad raised grievances through the PMO and worked with the banks. Within 18 days, both accounts showed zero balances without the written-off tags. His score rose from 743 to 790.

His earlier late payments remain visible because they were genuine. The correction changed his present account status; it did not erase accurate history.

Why This Keeps Happening

Lender reporting: The lender must update the bureau; payment alone does not update your report.

Settlement status: A Settled status can remain until any waived balance is paid and the lender agrees to update it.

Sold accounts: Sold or assigned accounts may carry old reporting errors into another institution.

Bureau disputes: Bureau disputes depend on the lender verifying the correction.

What You Can Do

Before paying, ask the lender in writing how the account will be reported.

Obtain a No Dues Certificate and keep proof of payment.

Check your report after one or two reporting cycles for the account status, balance and overdue amount.

If incorrect, write to the lender with evidence and raise a bureau dispute.

If unresolved, consider escalation through the RBI Ombudsman or PMO grievance portal.
