Welded Stainless Steel Tubes Are A Cost Effective Choice For Water, Food, Architecture And Light Industrial Lines
Walk into any kitchen equipment factory, food processing line, water treatment plant or modern building, and you will see stainless steel tubing everywhere. Not all of it is seamless. In fact, a large share of the stainless steel tubes used in daily life and industry are welded stainless steel tubes, and there are good reasons for that.
How are they made? A welded stainless steel tube starts as a flat stainless coil. The coil is slit to width, formed gradually into a round tube on a rolling line, and then the open seam is welded, usually by TIG or plasma welding without filler metal. The weld bead is then planed inside and outside, and the tube is polished or pickled to a clean finish. Because the process starts from a sheet rather than piercing a solid billet, welded tubes can hold closer wall tolerances, carry a better surface finish, and cost less than seamless tubes of the same size.
When should you choose welded? Welded tubing is the standard choice for decorative railing, food and dairy equipment, pharmaceutical lines, water and wastewater, HVAC, and low pressure fluid transfer. It is supplied in long lengths, ...
... which reduces the number of fittings and joints on site. Where you need to be more careful is high pressure, high temperature, and sour or heavily corrosive service. In those cases, engineers often specify seamless tube, or a welded tube that has been fully X ray tested and one hundred percent inspected.
Which grade do you need? The most common grades are 304 and 304L for general use, and 316 and 316L where chloride or mild chemical exposure is expected. The low carbon L versions reduce carbide precipitation during welding, which helps protect against intergranular corrosion. For tougher jobs, duplex 2205 is worth considering because it is stronger and more resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
For buyers looking for welded stainless steel tube, the key questions are usually the same. What is the outside diameter and wall thickness tolerance? Is the inner surface smooth enough for your fluid? What finish is required, whether annealed, pickled, brushed or mirror polished? And does the mill provide test certificates with each batch? A good supplier will answer all of these before you even ask, and will send sample pieces so your QC team can check the weld and surface.
As an experienced industrial pipe supplier, we export welded and seamless stainless tubes, carbon steel pipes, alloy pipes and matching fittings, flanges and valves to distributors, contractors and equipment makers in more than sixty countries. We help customers compare seamless versus welded options, and we will honestly tell you when welded is enough and when you really need seamless, instead of always pushing the more expensive product.
The right tube is the one that fits the service, not the most expensive one on the shelf. If you send us your application, working pressure, medium and required standard, our team will recommend a practical grade and size, and give you a clear quotation with delivery time.
