A 304 stainless steel pipe carries nearly double the nickel of an SS 202 stainless steel pipe. On a chemistry sheet, that looks like a small gap. On a site, it decides whether a railing still looks clean in year five or shows brown streaks after two monsoons.

Many buyers see the lower ss 202 price and stop reading there. That is where costly mistakes begin. SS 202 is a sensible choice in some parts of a building and a poor one in others. The trick is to know which is which before the order goes out.

What goes into an SS 202 pipe

202 stainless steel belongs to the austenitic family, just like 304. The difference lies in the recipe. Commonly published figures for 202 grade stainless steel are 17–19% chromium, 4–6% nickel and 7.5–10% manganese. Grade 304 runs at 18–20% chromium, 8–10.5% nickel and about 2% manganese.

Nickel is expensive. Manganese is not. So makers of 202 replace part of the nickel with manganese, and the cost comes down. India has taken to this in a big way. The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) notes that 200-series grades dominate the Indian market.

There ...
... is a price to pay, though. A peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Materials Research compared manganese-containing 202-type alloys with 304. Pitting resistance and time to failure got worse as the manganese content went up. In simple words, less nickel means a thinner safety margin against corrosion.

That one fact explains almost everything else in this article.

Where SS 202 pipe works well

Inside a dry, covered building, the corrosion risk is low. Here a stainless steel round pipe in 202 does its job and saves money. Good uses include:

Staircase handrails and balustrades in homes, offices and showrooms
Interior partition frames and display structures
Mall, hotel and lobby railings that are cleaned regularly
Furniture frames, shelving and décor elements
Light-duty frames in dry commercial interiors

A stainless steel pipe in 202 also suits budget-led jobs such as gates and grills inside a covered compound, where the pipe stays out of the rain. Buyers comparing the ss square pipe price of 202 and 304 will find the gap widest on such large-volume orders. If the surface is polished and wiped regularly, it keeps its shine for years.

Wall thickness matters as much as grade for handrails. A thin-walled pipe dents easily and flexes under a hand, however good the steel. Match the thickness to how people will use the railing, and ask your fabricator what they recommend for public spaces.

The pattern is simple. Dry air, no salt, no chemicals, regular cleaning. When these four hold, 202 gives you the stainless look at a lower cost.

Where SS 202 pipe does not work

Corrosion in stainless steel rarely announces itself. It begins as light brown staining, then spreads, and by the time the owner notices, the railing needs replacement. These are the places where we advise against 202.

Coastal areas. Salt in the air attacks the thin protective layer on the steel. A coastal railway project in Andhra Pradesh shows how seriously this is taken. For its stainless steel foot-over-bridge at Naupada, Indian Railways turned to a specialist stainless grade, because corrosion has long troubled coastal railway structures. Do not assume that being a few streets away from the shore makes a site safe. Ask your engineer to judge the exposure.

Swimming pool and spa areas. Chlorine and humidity are hard on any stainless steel. 202 has little margin to spare here.

Open outdoor use in humid or polluted cities. A terrace railing faces rain, damp air and fine dust every day. 304 is the safer minimum.

Chemical exposure. Kitchens, laboratories and workshops that use acids or chlorine-based cleaners can stain 202 quickly.

Primary load-bearing structure. Do not use 202 pipe as a main structural member unless your structural engineer has approved the grade and the design. Decorative and structural jobs are not the same.

SS 202 vs SS 304: when the extra cost makes sense

The ss 304 pipe price is higher, and buyers feel it on the quote. But the right comparison is cost over the life of the building, not cost at purchase.

Suppose a railing in 202 starts to stain in an open balcony after three years. The owner pays again for removal, new pipe, fabrication and fixing. The labour is often costlier than the pipe. In that case, a 304 stainless steel pipe would have been cheaper in the end.

On the other hand, if the railing sits inside a dry showroom, paying more for 304 buys you very little. The chemistry advantage of 304 never gets used.

A good rule: ask where the pipe will stand, not what it will cost. If the answer is “indoors and dry”, 202 is a fair choice. If the answer is “outdoors”, “near the sea” or “near water”, move up to 304 or 316.

You can compare both grades on our SS 304 pipe page and our SS 202 pipe page.

Welding and fabrication cautions

Welding turns a safe pipe into a risky one if done carelessly. Keep these points in mind.

Standard fusion welding is used for 202. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for this grade.
Weld zones are where corrosion usually shows first. Ask your fabricator to clean and pickle the joints well.
Never use carbon steel brushes or grinding discs on stainless steel. Iron particles left behind will rust and stain the surface.
Give the finished weld a proper polish. A rough joint holds moisture and dirt.

Even a good pipe fails when fabrication is poor. Pick a fabricator who works with stainless steel regularly.

Care that stretches the life of 202

Maintenance matters more for 202 than for 304. A few habits make a big difference.

Wipe railings with a soft cloth and mild soap solution every few weeks.
Rinse and dry the surface after cleaning.
Keep bleach, hydrochloric acid and tile-cleaning acids away from the pipe. Splashes during floor cleaning are a common cause of spots.
Remove any brown spots early, with a non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner.
Inspect weld joints and base plates once or twice a year.
Mistakes that repeat on site

Most failures are not about the grade alone. They come from a few repeated habits.

Choosing 202 for a balcony because the indoor railing looked fine.
Skipping the test certificate to save a day.
Using one grade for the whole project, from lobby to rooftop, instead of matching each area.
Cleaning marble or tile floors with acid next to the railing base.
Ignoring early brown spots until they spread.

Each of these is easy to avoid. A short site checklist before ordering saves weeks of rework later.

Why the magnet test proves little

A magnet test on site is a common shortcut for judging grade. It is unreliable. Sources do not agree on whether 202 is magnetic, and cold working can change how an austenitic steel responds to a magnet. Treat the magnet as a rough hint at best. The mill test certificate is the document that settles the question.

How to buy SS 202 pipe without regret

A pipe stamped “stainless” is not always the grade you paid for. Check these things before you accept delivery.

Grade proof. Ask for a mill test certificate. It should show the chemical composition of the batch.
Size and wall thickness. Confirm outside diameter and thickness in millimetres. A thinner wall saves money and loses strength.
Finish. Mirror, satin or matt finish should be stated in the order.
Standard. Ask which standard the pipe is made to. For railings and ornamental frames, welded stainless tubing is commonly supplied to ASTM A554.
Length and cut. Check whether you need standard lengths or cut pieces, for example a 20 feet steel pipe price quote versus cut-to-size.
Price basis. Rates change with pipe size, thickness, finish and the steel market. Ask for a written quote, not a verbal one.

A stainless steel pipe manufacturer in India that can give you the certificate and answer questions about the grade is worth more than the cheapest quote.

Choosing the right grade with Venus Engineers

At Venus Engineers, we supply stainless steel pipes and tubes in SS 202 and SS 304, in round and square sections. We do not push one grade for every job. Tell us where the pipe will be fitted, the size you need and the finish you want, and our team will suggest the grade that suits the site and the budget.

If your project is indoors and dry, you get 202 at a sensible rate. If it faces rain, humidity or a coastal location, we will tell you so before you order.

Ready to buy? Visit our stainless steel pipe manufacturer and supplier page and send your requirement. Share the size, thickness, quantity and location, and we will come back with a quote.

Frequently asked questions
Will SS 202 pipe rust?

Yes, in the wrong place. It resists rust well in dry indoor air. Salt, chlorine, humidity and acids make it stain faster than 304.

Can I use SS 202 pipe for balcony railings?

A covered balcony in an inland city is usually fine if you clean it regularly. An open balcony exposed to rain is a gamble. Choose 304 there.

Is SS 202 pipe safe near the coast?

No. Coastal air is full of salt. Use 316 or a higher grade, as your structural engineer recommends.

How is SS 202 different from SS 304?

202 has about 4–6% nickel and 7.5–10% manganese. 304 has about 8–10.5% nickel and 2% manganese. More nickel gives 304 better corrosion resistance and a higher price.

Can SS 202 pipe be welded at the site?

Yes, with standard fusion methods, but not with oxyacetylene. Clean and pickle the joints afterwards, and use stainless steel tools only. Weld zones are the first place where stains appear, so they need the most care.

What decides the SS 202 price?

Pipe size, wall thickness, finish, length and the day’s raw material rates. Ask for a fresh quote for every order.

The takeaway

A SS 202 stainless steel pipe is not a bad choice. It is a grade with a job. Use it indoors, in dry and covered spaces, where it saves real money. Keep it away from salt, pools, chemicals and open weather, and never choose it for structural work without an engineer’s sign-off.

This article is for general guidance. For load-bearing or safety-critical work, consult a qualified structural engineer and check the material test certificate before use.
