Why Most Small Business Websites Don't Rank On Google
Many small business websites look good but still do not appear when local customers search on Google. The problem is rarely one big mistake. It is usually a set of small, fixable issues that make it hard for search engines and visitors to understand what a page is about and why it should be shown. Here are five common problems, and plain fixes for each one. 1. Pages that target no clear keyword. A common problem is a page that tries to cover everything at once. It mentions several services, several places, and several topics, but it never clearly answers one search. Search engines then have no strong reason to show it for any one query. The fix is simple: give each important page one main topic. Choose the phrase a customer would actually type, such as the service and the area served, and use it naturally in the page title, the first paragraph, and at least one heading. Then keep the rest of the page focused on that topic. 2. Titles that do not match page content. A title can attract a click, but if the page does not deliver what the title promised, visitors leave quickly. That mismatch also makes the page look less useful for ...
... that search. The fix is to write the title after you know what the page really covers. The title, the first paragraph, and the main headings should all point to the same answer. If the page is about repair, do not title it like a buying guide. 3. Missing or broken internal links. Many small sites have useful pages that are hard to reach because no other page links to them, or because old links lead to pages that no longer exist. Visitors and search engines then miss important content. The fix is to check your main pages for broken links and to add helpful links between related pages. For example, a home page should link to main service pages, and each service page should link back to related services and to a contact page, using clear words that describe the linked page. 4. Slow pages. Large images, extra scripts, and cluttered layouts can make a page slow, especially on a phone. Visitors often leave before the page finishes loading, and a slow page is harder to use. The fix is to compress images before uploading them, remove tools and pop-ups you do not need, and test the page on a phone. Aim for a page that loads quickly and is easy to read without zooming or waiting. 5. Content that answers no real search question. Some pages describe a business in general terms but never answer the questions customers actually ask, such as what a service includes, who it is for, how long it takes, or what to do next. The fix is to start with real customer questions. List the questions you hear most often, answer each one directly near the top of the relevant page, and use clear headings so readers can find the answer fast. Short, direct answers work better than long introductions. A practical next step is to pick one page, fix its topic, title, links, speed, and main answer, and then repeat the process for the next most important page. Small, steady improvements are easier to maintain than a complete rebuild. For owners who want help applying these basics, an experienced SEO specialist can review a site and point out the fixes that matter most.
