Advice For Towing A Caravan Trailer As Part Of Your Next Camping Holiday
Towing a trailer is not that tough but if you are new to the experience then it can be a little harrowing. The number one problem is becoming comfortable with the added length of the trailer, combined with that of the car, and how to drive them together.
So if you are in this position, here are a few tips to remember to ensure you have a safer road trip and also feel more confident about driving with a trailer.
1) Firstly, you need to check the manual. Most caravans or trailers have a manual or even just a sticker on the side that will tell you what type of vehicle you need in order to tow it safely. For example, you don't want to get stuck towing a caravan or trailer with a small city-car, as in all likelihood it won't have the power.
2) Next, check the trailer to see if it has a hitch package. This package is a facility to connect your trailer or camper electronics to your vehicle. This is an essential safely feature as it provides the electricity to the lights on the trailer, ensuring that other vehicles are aware that you are on the road.
3) Determine your viewing restrictions and limits, when ...
... the trailer is attached. This could involve extension gadgets that can fix to your side mirrors and allow you to have a better view of your trailer and also allow you to have a view of any vehicles that may be driving at the side or even behind you. The last thing you want to do is crash into a car that is trying to overtake you.
4) Have a safety inspection before you put the key in the ignition. You need to take the time to ensure that fittings and connections are to the required standard. This should include: checking the pressure of tyres, making sure hitch wiring is long enough for the trailer to make turns, attaching the stabilizer and equalizer, making sure the trailer or caravan is level and adjust the trailer tongue so that it is in the right position.
5) Secure everything before putting the key in the ignition. You really should have an inspection as you don't want get to your holiday destination and be surprised to find all your holiday gear is broken and smashed to a million pieces.
6) Hold your speed when you go down a hill. Switch to a lower gear and then gently go down the hill, it is the only real way to deal with our hilly countryside.
7) When you reverse you should be especially careful and take your time. In the event of steering then any slight touch on the wheel can damage the camper and completely destroy the tow bar.
8) Next, you should try and not make any sharp or abrupt turns. Your driving should be smooth and any steering should happen ahead of time, if you do this then it will ensure that you stay safe whilst you are driving.
9) Finally, if your current vehicle is not capable of towing a trailer then it might be a lot safer to lease a vehicle instead. For instance, two months ago I decided on a Fiat leasing deal, which I found to be better for my towing needs.
Hopefully, if you follow this advice you will really enjoy yourself during your next journey, regardless of the location.
