How EV Manufacturers Use Walk-In Chambers for Cold-Climate Validation
Cold is where EVs lose the most: range drops, DC fast charging slows or stops, the cabin takes energy to heat, and the battery management system has to juggle all of it. Manufacturers validate that behaviour in a walk-in chamber big enough to hold the whole vehicle, because the interactions between pack, thermal loop, HVAC and controls only show up at system level.
What do EV makers actually test in a cold walk-in chamber?
Range and energy consumption: tested at -7 °C, -20 °C and -40 °C against the baseline, with and without cabin heating.
Battery preconditioning: how fast the pack reaches a temperature that allows regen and fast charging, and the energy that costs.
DC fast charging: accepted charge rate and taper versus pack temperature; behaviour of the charge port and contactors when cold-soaked.
Thermal management: heat-pump and PTC heater performance, coolant loop behaviour, glycol viscosity effects.
Cabin comfort and defrost: time to clear the windscreen and reach a comfortable cabin, per regulatory and internal ...
... targets.
Cold start: performance of 12 V systems, doors, seals, displays and actuators after a deep soak.
What chamber capability does this need?
Requirement Why it matters for EV cold validation
Drive-in access + reinforced floor (up to ~3,000 kg/m²) Whole vehicle enters under its own power; no rigging
Temperature down to -40 °C (Fast-Ramp to -70 °C) Covers extreme-cold market requirements and margin testing
±1 °C uniformity via 100+ air changes/hour Prevents stratification around a large vehicle so results are repeatable
Ramp rate up to 5 °C/min (Fast-Ramp models) Thermal transient and shock-style profiles without a second chamber
Humidity control 10–95% RH Frost, condensation and defrost testing
Cable ports, high-current pass-throughs, charger feed Run DC fast charging and instrumentation from outside the cold zone
Personnel safety system Interior release, kill switch and alarms for technicians working in the cold
How big does the chamber need to be?
A single-vehicle cold chamber is commonly in the 20–40 m³ range for drive-in access with working space around the car. Contract labs and multi-vehicle programmes go to 100 m³+. Indeecon's walk-in test chambers span roughly 8 m³ to 100 m³+, built from modular cam-lock PUF panels that assemble on-site in 2–5 days, with a drive-in L-series for full vehicles and a Fast-Ramp series for 5 °C/min transitions.

Where do smaller chambers still fit?
Component and module cold work does not need a drive-in room. Battery modules, BMS units, HV harnesses, actuators and displays are validated in a reach-in cold test chamber down to -40 °C or -70 °C, and rapid transitions on those parts go in a thermal shock chamber. The walk-in is for when the answer depends on the whole vehicle behaving as a system.
