Coupang Data Scraping For Korea Market-entry Intelligence
The client
The client asked Actowiz Metrics for "a reliable source of brand-level sales data for the Coupang marketplace in Korea," noting that Coupang shares limited data with outside parties. As the largest e-commerce platform in Korea, Coupang was central to the client's entry plan. The team needed to know which brands led its categories, at what prices, and how much demand existed, before committing a budget.
The challenge
1. No public sales figures. Coupang does not publish sales by product or brand. 2. Korean-language listings. Titles, options and reviews are in Korean. 3. Delivery tiers. Products sold with Rocket Delivery (Coupang's fast-delivery programme) behave differently from marketplace listings. 4. Option-heavy listings. One listing can include many sizes and bundles, each with its own price.
The solution
Step 1: Category mapping Actowiz Metrics mapped the relevant Coupang categories (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair treatment and scalp care) and defined a keyword set for each, in Korean.
Step 2: Daily collection For each category and keyword, collectors captured listing ...
... position, product title, brand, options, price, unit price, discount, Rocket Delivery flag, rating, review count and badges.
Step 3: Demand estimation Sales were estimated from public signals, not reported figures: Review velocity: new reviews per day, adjusted by a category review-to-purchase ratio range. Rank stability: products that hold top positions over many days indicate sustained demand. Stock signals: sold-out options and restocks. Each estimate was given as a range with a confidence band, and the method was explained in the report.
Step 4: Brand roll-up Products were grouped by brand to estimate brand share of category demand, price positioning and the share of each brand's range sold with Rocket Delivery.
The report showed that scalp-care shampoo had strong, growing demand, that the leading brands held their positions with heavy Rocket Delivery coverage, and that there was room in the upper-middle price band. The client chose to launch in this sub-category first and to prioritise fast-delivery eligibility.
Additional insights from the data
Bundles dominate. Multi-packs (for example "500ml x 2") made up a large share of top listings, so the client planned bundle packs for launch.
Reviews drive rank. Products with over 5,000 reviews held top positions far more consistently, which shaped the client's early review and sampling strategy.
Price bands are narrow. Most top products fell within a tight unit-price band, so pricing outside it would need a strong premium story.
Ingredient claims trend. Scalp-care and "low-irritation" claims appeared frequently in fast-growing listings, which informed the client's product messaging.
Honesty about estimates
Brand-level sales on Coupang can only be estimated. Actowiz Metrics presents ranges rather than single numbers, explains the method, and recommends validating estimates with the client's own early sales. As the client's own products went live, actual sales were used to calibrate the model for other brands in the category.
Why it worked
Korean-language keyword sets captured how shoppers actually search. Daily collection gave enough data points to estimate review velocity and rank stability. Ranges, not single numbers, kept the analysis honest and useful. Delivery-tier analysis revealed a key success factor in the category.
