A tractor is a big purchase for a family with two or three acres, and for many it never makes sense. The land is small, the plots are scattered, and the machine would sit idle for most of the year. Yet the work still has to be done on time.
The good news is that a handful of small engine machines can cover most of the jobs a tractor would do on a plot this size. This guide treats agricultural tools as machines you can carry on a bicycle carrier or a handcart, not only as hand tools like the sickle and the spade.
Match the job before you match the machine
Start with the calendar, not the catalogue. List the jobs that eat your labour in a normal season, then see which ones a small engine can take over. The list below is a starting point.

Weeding between crop rows: a power weeder.
Spraying for pests and disease: a knapsack or engine sprayer.
Digging planting pits and fence post holes: an earth auger.
Clearing bunds, borders and post-harvest growth: a brush cutter.
Lifting water for irrigation: a portable engine ...
... pump (see the separate pump guide for head and hose details).

Most of these come under small farm machines like weeders and sprayers. Each one replaces a job that used to need several pairs of hands.
The weeder is where most people overspend
A power weeder is the star machine for inter-row work, since it cuts weeds and loosens the soil between rows in one pass. It is also the machine most likely to gather dust. Weeding has a short window, usually a few days at one or two points in a crop cycle. For the rest of the year, the weeder sits in the shed.
That is why renting or sharing a power weeder can make more sense than owning one. A machine that works four mornings a season earns very little for its price, like keeping a wedding sherwani for daily wear. Shared among five or six neighbouring plots, the same machine stays busy, and each family pays only a small share.
There is a catch. Everyone needs weeding done at the same time. Weeds do not wait for a turn. If your group all sows within the same week, you will queue. Stagger the sowing dates a little, or accept that the last farmer in line weeds late. This depends on your crop and your local weather, so talk it through before you buy.
A power weeder only suits row crops sown at a regular spacing. Broadcast fields and very wet soil are poor fits.
Earth auger, sprayer and brush cutter
An earth auger digs planting pits and fence post holes quickly and keeps them round. Young saplings and fence posts then stand straight. A person with a crowbar tires after a few pits. An auger turns that into steady work. Stony or hard ground can stall it, so test a few spots first.
A sprayer protects the crop, and here the real choice is between hand pumped and engine driven. Small plots often manage with a knapsack. Larger or tall crops can justify an engine model. Rinse it after each use. Leftover chemical corrodes the tank and nozzle. Wear a mask, gloves and full sleeves while spraying, and keep the wind behind you. Many small farmers skip this, and it shows up later as a cough or a rash.
A brush cutter clears bunds and overgrown corners after the rains. It will not replace a weeder in the crop rows. Think of it as the machine for the edges.
Before any purchase, ask one more question. Who will service it? A small engine needs clean fuel, a clean air filter and a mechanic within reach. A cheap machine that sits broken for a month in sowing season costs more than it saved.
How a farmer group can share machines
Sharing works better with a few plain rules written down. Without them, quarrels start.

Pick one person to keep the machine and log who borrowed it and for how long.
Agree on a fuel rule. The user refills the tank, or pays a fixed amount per hour.
Share the cost of repairs and spares, and set aside a small fund for them.
Book the machine by date during busy weeks.
Keep the manual with the machine and teach each new user how to start, stop and clean it.

A farmer producer group is a natural home for this. The group can buy once, keep a booking book, and rotate use between members.
Agricultural tools and the SMAM scheme
The central government runs a scheme called SMAM, the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation, to help farmers buy machinery. In broad terms, it offers financial support on certain machines, and farmer groups and custom hiring centres can also be eligible. The details change from year to year and from state to state, including which machines qualify, who is eligible and how the support is paid out.
For that reason this article quotes no figures. Do not rely on a number from a dealer or a neighbour. Confirm current SMAM rules, the list of eligible machines and the application steps with your state agriculture department or the local agriculture office before you pay for anything. Ask whether the support applies to an individual farmer, to a group, or only to a custom hiring centre, since that can change how you plan the purchase.
Keep documents like land records and identity proof ready, since most schemes ask for them. Also check when the support is paid. If it comes after purchase, you need the cash up front.
Start with the costliest job
If money is tight, find the job that eats the most labour hours. Then ask whether renting or sharing solves it. Yuri Tools sells agricultural machines such as pumps, sprayers, weeders and augers, if you want models to compare once the job is clear. A farm without a tractor can still run well. It needs a few sensible agricultural tools, used on time.
