A Practical Guide To A Day Trip From Dubai To Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is only about 140 km from Dubai, which makes it one of the easiest day trips in the UAE. The drive usually takes around 90 minutes in light traffic, but a good day out depends on a few decisions made before you leave.
Pick your timing
Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the busiest periods on the highway between the two emirates. Leaving around 9:30 or 10 am and heading back before the evening build-up usually makes the drive easier. Weekends and public holidays bring bigger crowds at popular attractions, so arriving early helps. In summer, expect strong heat between stops and plan indoor visits for the middle of the day.
Choose fewer stops
It is tempting to see everything, but three or four stops is a realistic day. Most visitors begin at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a place of worship with a strict dress code: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a head covering for women. Access can change around prayer times and on Fridays, so check before you go. Good additions include Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, Qasr Al Watan, the Corniche for an easy walk by the water, or Yas ...
... Island if you are travelling with children. Some venues close one day a week, so confirm opening days in advance.
Decide how you will travel
Driving yourself gives freedom, but you handle navigation, parking and tolls, and you spend the evening drive home tired after a long day. Organised coach tours usually cost less but follow a fixed schedule with limited time at each stop. Taxis and ride apps suit a single one-way journey, though finding a ride back from a busy attraction in the evening can be harder than expected. A private driver costs more, yet it suits families, older travellers and small groups who want to set their own pace and avoid carrying bags between stops.
Set a rough budget
Costs add up quickly: attraction tickets, lunch, parking or fares, and perhaps a coffee on the Corniche. Many venues sell tickets online, which can save time at the entrance. Leave an hour for lunch rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Agree the return plan
The return journey is where many day trips go wrong. Decide the approximate return time and pickup point in advance, and allow extra time if you have a flight to catch or dinner plans in Dubai.
Pack a few essentials
Bring water, comfortable shoes, a phone charger and a light scarf or cover-up for the mosque. Carry photo ID too, such as a passport copy or Emirates ID.
Keep the plan flexible
A rough itinerary beats a rigid one. At Luxury Chauffeurs Dubai we often arrange these trips with a driver who waits between stops, and the guests who enjoy them most usually chose a few places, left time for lunch and agreed the return in advance. However you travel, leave room to enjoy the day rather than racing through a long list.
