CFE Certification is the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential awarded exclusively by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). It validates professional knowledge in fraud schemes, investigations, legal issues, prevention and deterrence. Candidates need ACFE membership, at least 40 eligibility points to take the exam, and 50 points plus two years of qualifying fraud-related experience to earn the credential. The updated 2026 CFE exam has three separately timed sections, and candidates must score at least 75% on each section.
What Is a CFE Certification?
For anyone asking what is CFE certification, it is a professional anti-fraud credential designed for people who investigate, detect, prevent or deter fraud.
The Certified Fraud Examiner certification is issued only by the ACFE, making it distinct from general auditing, accounting or compliance qualifications. The ACFE states that no other organization is authorized to award the CFE credential.
A Certified Fraud Examiner may work in areas such as:
Fraud investigations

Internal audit

Forensic accounting

...
... Financial crime

Compliance

Loss prevention

Anti-money laundering

Corporate security

Risk management

Legal and litigation support

Fraud prevention programs

The credential is especially relevant when your responsibilities require you to understand both how fraud occurs and how organizations investigate, prevent and respond to it.
What Changed in the CFE Exam in 2026?
This is one of the most important points for candidates using older study resources.
The ACFE launched an updated CFE exam on June 2, 2026 after completing a new job-task analysis to reflect changes in modern fraud examination.
Older websites may still describe the CFE exam as having four sections. That information is now outdated.
The current CFE exam contains three sections:
CFE Exam Section
Questions
Time
Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes
120
2.5 hours
Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues
120
2.5 hours
Fraud Prevention and Deterrence
70
1.5 hours
Total
310
6.5 hours

Each section is administered separately and contains multiple-choice and True/False questions. The examination is closed-book and closed-notes.
What Does the CFE Exam Cover?
The updated exam structure groups the fraud examination body of knowledge into three major areas.
Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes
This section evaluates your understanding of how fraud is committed against individuals and organizations.
Topics include:
Occupational fraud

Financial statement fraud

Asset misappropriation

Corruption

Financial crimes

Basic accounting concepts

Fraud indicators

Prevention and detection techniques

Candidates should understand not only the names of fraud schemes, but also how they work, what warning signs they create and how investigators can detect them.
Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues
This section combines investigative methodology with legal considerations.
Areas include:
Planning investigations

Collecting evidence

Data gathering and analysis

Interview techniques

Employee rights

Report writing

Criminal and civil proceedings

Expert testimony

Legal-system fundamentals

A strong Certified Fraud Examiner course should therefore develop investigative judgment rather than relying entirely on memorization.
Fraud Prevention and Deterrence
This part examines why fraud occurs and how organizations can reduce fraud risk.
Candidates should understand:
Fraud risk assessment

Corporate governance

Ethical behavior

Fraud prevention programs

Management responsibilities

Auditor responsibilities

Fraud deterrence

Organizational controls

This section is shorter than the other two but still requires the same 75% minimum passing score.
What Are the CFE Certification Requirements?
The current CFE certification requirements involve five major elements:
Become an ACFE Associate Member

Meet the required eligibility-point threshold

Obtain qualifying fraud-related professional experience

Pass every section of the CFE exam

Agree to follow the ACFE Code of Professional Ethics

ACFE membership is required to take the examination and earn the credential.
How Many Points Do You Need?
The ACFE uses a qualifying-point system.
You need:
40 points to take the CFE exam

50 points to become certified

Points can come from education, approved professional certifications and qualifying professional experience.
A bachelor's degree or equivalent earns 40 education points, and no specific academic major is required.
Current ACFE guidance awards:
Qualification
Points
One year of qualifying higher education
10
Associate degree
20
Bachelor's degree or higher
40
Two years qualifying professional experience
10
Four years qualifying experience
20
Six years qualifying experience
30
Eight years qualifying experience
40
Ten years qualifying experience
50

The ACFE also recognizes selected professional certifications for 10 qualifying education points.
Do You Need a Degree to Become a CFE?
No.
A university degree is not an absolute requirement.
If you do not have a bachelor's degree, the ACFE allows qualifying fraud-related experience to substitute for academic education. In general, two years of fraud-related professional experience can substitute for one year of academic study.
This gives experienced investigators, auditors, law-enforcement professionals and other anti-fraud specialists a pathway toward certification even without a traditional four-year degree.
What Work Experience Qualifies?
To actually receive the CFE credential, candidates need at least two years of professional experience related to fraud detection or deterrence.
Recognized areas include:
Accounting and auditing

Fraud investigation

Criminology and sociology

Loss prevention

Fraud-related legal work

Fraud-risk management

Proactive fraud detection

Fraud-related teaching, writing or research

The ACFE focuses on your actual responsibilities, not just your job title. Work outside these categories may still qualify if a substantial part of your role involves detecting, investigating or deterring fraud.
Candidates who have 40 points but less than two years of experience can still take the exam. They simply cannot receive the CFE designation until all certification requirements are satisfied.
How Much Does CFE Certification Cost?
The current CFE certification cost starts with the exam application.
CFE Cost Item
Current Fee
CFE Exam Application
$480
First attempt at each exam section
Included
Retake of a failed section
$110
Application extension
$150
ACFE membership
Additional; varies
Preparation course/materials
Optional; separate

The $480 application fee includes the first attempt at every required exam section.
Because ACFE membership is mandatory, the true Certified Fraud Examiner certification cost also includes membership dues. Membership fees can vary according to location and membership category, so candidates should calculate those separately.
Optional study programs also increase the total cost.
For example, the ACFE currently offers one-year CFE Exam Prep Course subscription packages ranging from the Silver package at $899.20 for members to higher-tier packages that add study guides and on-demand review courses.
How to Get a CFE Certification Step by Step
If you are researching how to get a CFE certification or how to become a CFE, use this sequence:
Join the ACFE as an Associate Member.

Calculate your qualifying points.

Confirm that you have at least 40 points before applying.

Review whether your work experience qualifies.

Gather proof of education and professional experience.

Obtain three professional recommendations.

Submit the CFE Exam Application.

Prepare for all three current exam sections.

Schedule each section through the approved testing process.

Score 75% or higher on every section.

Complete the 50-point and two-year experience requirements.

Receive approval from the ACFE Certification Committee.

The ACFE recommends submitting your application and documents at least 60 days before your intended exam date.
How Can You Take the CFE Exam?
The CFE exam is computer-based and delivered through Prometric.
Candidates can currently test:
Remotely through live online proctoring, or

In person at a Prometric testing center

The three exam sections are separate, giving candidates more flexibility than one continuous 6.5-hour examination.
What Is the CFE Passing Score?
Candidates must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly in each section.
Passing one or two sections does not compensate for failing another.
Each section must independently meet the 75% requirement.
Candidates currently receive up to five attempts per section. If a section is not passed within five attempts, previous results and program eligibility can expire, and a two-year waiting period may apply before restarting the certification process.
How Should You Prepare for the CFE Exam?
A productive preparation strategy should follow the current 2026 blueprint rather than an older four-part study plan.
Start With the Updated Content Outline
Map your study plan to:
Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes → Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues → Fraud Prevention and Deterrence
Build Applied Knowledge
Do not memorize definitions without context.
Ask:
What fraud scheme is occurring?

Which evidence should be preserved?

What interview approach is appropriate?

Which legal issue affects the investigation?

Which control could have prevented the fraud?

What should management do next?

Use Practice Questions Carefully
Practice questions should identify weak concepts rather than become material to memorize.
Study One Section at a Time
Because each section is separately timed, candidates can prepare in focused blocks.
Practice Under Time Limits
Use the actual exam timing:
120 questions in 2.5 hours

120 questions in 2.5 hours

70 questions in 1.5 hours

That develops both accuracy and pacing.
Which CFE Exam Preparation Option Should You Choose?
A good Certified Fraud Examiner course should be aligned with the June 2026 exam update.
Candidates can use:
Independent study

ACFE Exam Prep Course

Live review courses

Virtual instruction

Fraud Examiners Manual

Practice questions

Structured third-party training

The ACFE's official Prep Course currently includes 500+ lessons, nearly 1,400 study questions and nearly 800 flashcards, making it a comprehensive self-study option.
Whatever training method you choose, confirm that it teaches the current three-section exam, not the retired four-section structure.
How Do You Maintain the Certified Fraud Examiner Certification?
Passing the exam is not the end of the certification cycle.
Active Certified Fraud Examiners must complete 20 Continuing Professional Education credits every compliance year.
Of those:
At least 10 CPE credits must be fraud-related

At least 2 CPE credits must relate directly to ethics

CFEs must also maintain their ACFE membership and certify compliance annually.
Is the CFE Certification Worth Pursuing?
The CFE certification has the strongest career fit when fraud prevention, investigation or financial misconduct forms a meaningful part of your work.
It can be particularly relevant for:
Internal auditors

Fraud investigators

Forensic accountants

Compliance professionals

Financial-crime analysts

Law-enforcement investigators

Loss-prevention specialists

Corporate investigators

Risk professionals

The credential combines fraud schemes, investigative methods, legal considerations and fraud prevention rather than concentrating only on accounting.
If your goal is becoming a Certified Fraud Examiner, start by calculating your ACFE eligibility points and reviewing your fraud-related work experience. Then build your preparation around the new three-section CFE exam introduced in June 2026. Using outdated four-section study material is one of the easiest ways to make your preparation unnecessarily difficult.
